Nebbiolo: one grape, many different appellations
49 cuvées, from Langhe to grand cru, from €17.90Nebbiolo is the most represented grape variety in our Italian section. Little colour, plenty of tannin, an acidity that gives no ground: a pale wine in the glass and a massive one on the palate, which always surprises the first time it is served.
It almost never carries its name on the label. Depending on the hill where it grows, it is called Barolo, Barbaresco, Ghemme or simply Langhe Nebbiolo, and prices range from €17.90 to €866 a bottle. The first table places these appellations in relation to one another, by entry price and level of demand.

Where Nebbiolo grows, and what each appellation does with it
The grape variety does not change from one row to the next in this table. What changes is the authorized area, the minimum aging period before release for sale, and consequently the price of the first bottle.
| Denomination | Where, in Piedmont | The level of expectation | The style | With us, from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Langhe Nebbiolo and Langhe Rosso | The same hills as Barolo and Barbaresco, without the zone constraint. | No long aging required. Often young vines, or plots declassified from grand cru. | Nebbiolo without the wait: sour cherry, fine tannins, a bottle you open that very evening. | €17.90460 Casina Bric, Mesdì Red |
| Nebbiolo d'Alba | On both sides of the Tanaro, around Alba. | A broader area than that of the two grands crus, without a long stay in wood. | Softer and more direct. Our only vintage from the area is a sparkling rosé. | €28460 Casina Bric, Cuvée 970 Brut Rosé |
| Ghemme and Colline Novaresi Upper Piedmont | North of Novara, at the foot of Monte Rosa, far from the Langhe. | Glacial, sandy, acidic soils and a significantly cooler climate. | A slender Nebbiolo, more taut than broad, with a very marked acidity. | €33Agricola Brigatti, Motfrei 2020 |
| Baroloeleven towns | South of Alba, on the largest vineyard of the three major appellations. | 38 months of aging minimum before sale, including 18 in wood. 62 months for a riserva. | The most tannic and the slowest to open. A generous decanting, or ten years in the cellar. | €39.90Quickly Harvested, Your Countries 2020 |
| Barbarescofour municipalities | North-east of Alba, on hills closer to the Tanaro. | A minimum of 26 months aging, including 9 in wood. 50 months for a riserva. | The same finesse, with tannins that integrate more quickly. The most approachable when young. | €52Morra Gabriele 2020 |
Nebbiolo has also traveled outside of Italy: our L.A. Cetto Reserva Privada 2019 comes from Baja California, Mexico, and sells for €132 per case of six.
Agreements that work, and those best avoided
With this grape variety, it's all about the tannins. It needs fat and body to balance it out, otherwise it will dry out the mouth and dominate everything.
| The dish | Why it works | The wine to open |
|---|---|---|
| Braised Red Meats beef, cheek, oxtail | Collagen and melted fat coat the tannin, which immediately appears softer. | A village BaroloQuick Harvest Your Countries 2020 · €39.90 |
| Hairy game roe deer, wild boar | Pronounced flesh, the only one that stands up to the most full-bodied vintages. | A cru from the eastern part of the LangheClerico Barolo Bussia 2019 · €75 |
| Porcini Mushroom Risotto | The mushroom prolongs the forest floor notes that this grape variety develops with age. | A Langhe NebbioloClerico Langhe Nebbiolo 2021 · €29.80 |
| Herb-roasted lamb | The lamb fat and the wine's acidity complement each other, with neither overpowering the other. | A cru barbarescoSottimano Pajoré 2020 · €102 |
| Aged mountain cheeses pressed pasta | Salt softens tannins. Fresh, soft cheeses, however, harden them. | A Nebbiolo from Alto PiemonteBrigatti Ghemme Oltre il Bosco 2020 · €46 |
| Dark chocolate, at the end of a meal | A dessert pairing, and only with the flavored and sweetened version of Barolo. | Barolo ChinatoMargherita Otto · €139.60 for 2 |
| Fish and Seafood to be avoided | Tannin and iodine don't go well together; the taste turns metallic in seconds. | Stay with white |
Serve around 17°C. Decant for one to two hours for vintages less than ten years old, and serve older vintages with care.

Pale in the glass, massive on the palate
Nebbiolo fools everyone at first encounter. The colour is light, almost orange at the edges after a few years, and many conclude they are holding a light wine. The next sip tells the opposite story: a tannin that fills the entire mouth, and an acidity that never backs down.
This combination explains the rest, including the prices. Such a tannic grape requires time, thus immobilized stock, thus appellations that codify the aging period. A Langhe Nebbiolo is released after a few months, a Barolo after thirty-eight. It's not a scale of quality; it's a scale of patience.
How do you choose
You always taste a domain's Langhe Nebbiolo before buying their Barolo. That's where you see what the winemaker does with the grape, when neither wood nor age covers up the work.
And you set aside the vintages that only hold up through extraction. With this grape, strength never replaces definition.

What we're asked about Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo, that's the grape variety used in Barolo, right?
Yes, 100%. Barolo and Barbaresco allow no other grape. The same grape variety also produces Ghemme and Gattinara in Alto Piemonte, where it is locally called Spanna, as well as Langhe Nebbiolo and Nebbiolo d'Alba. Our two main appellations each have their own page: barolo and barbaresco.
Why is this wine so pale?
The skin of the grape contains few pigments, and the color fades quickly: a ten-year-old Nebbiolo often has orangey hues. This says nothing about its power. It is one of the rare reds where the color and structure do not go together, and that is exactly what is surprising with the first glass.
What's the difference between a Langhe Nebbiolo and a Barolo?
The area and the duration. Langhe Nebbiolo is produced in a wider area and goes on sale without a long imposed aging period, whereas Barolo waits thirty-eight months. Many estates use young vines or downgraded batches from their crus, which makes it the best entry point into a house's style. For us, the price difference ranges from €17.90 to €39.90 for the first bottle of each category.
Barolo or Barbaresco, which one to choose?
Barbaresco opens sooner: twelve months less mandatory aging and a slightly more temperate vineyard. Barolo requires more decanting or cellaring, and generally lasts longer. For a dinner next week, choose Barbaresco. For a bottle to lay down in the cellar, choose Barolo.
Should you decant a Nebbiolo?
Yes, for young wines. One to two hours in a decanter will significantly soften the tannins and open up the nose to notes of faded rose, cherry, and tar. For a bottle that is twenty years old or more, prefer a delicate serving and a wide glass: decanting could exhaust it.
Does Nebbiolo grow anywhere other than in the Langhe?
Yes, but not much. Alto Piemonte produces it around Novara, on glacial soils and in a colder climate, which results in more taut wines: our Ghemme Oltre il Bosco comes from there. Outside Italy, plantings remain confidential; we have one from Mexico, the L.A. Cetto Reserva Privada 2019.
How long does a bottle last?
It depends entirely on the appellation. A Langhe Nebbiolo should be drunk within three to five years. A Barbaresco will easily last ten to fifteen years, and a Cru Barolo fifteen to twenty-five. Our product sheets indicate the potential of each vintage. There's no obligation to wait; a decanted Nebbiolo drinks very well young.
What is Barolo Chinato?
A Barolo wine flavored with cinchona bark and a blend of spices, fortified and sweetened. It is a traditional Piedmontese digestivo, served on its own or over dark chocolate, and not a table wine. Our Margherita Otto is an artisanal version, sold in two 50 cl bottles.
