Which cuvée to serve with which dish

Altitude gives the whole range an acidity that pairs well with food. The choice comes down mainly to how rich the dish is.

Our take

Freshness before power

Argentina long had a reputation for sun-drenched, heavy wines. Atamisque shows the country's other face: that of its high-altitude vineyards, where grapes ripen under strong sunshine and rest at night in the cold air coming down from the Andes.

We chose the estate for this poise. The Serbal Malbec and the Serbal Viognier are among the easiest Argentine wines to love in our cellar. The Catalpa Malbec and the Atamisque Chardonnay play in the big league, at a price that remains reasonable for this level. And the Serbal Pinot Noir shows that an Argentine red can also be light.

Why altitude changes everything

At 1,300 m, the difference between day and night often exceeds 15 °C. The grapes ripen in the sun and keep their acidity in the cool. The skins thicken under UV light: more colour, finer tannins. The result: ripe wines that stay easy to digest, even at 14% alcohol.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask us about Atamisque

Where is Bodega Atamisque?

In San José, in the department of Tupungato, in the north of the Valle de Uco, about an hour south of the city of Mendoza. The vines are planted at around 1,300 m altitude, on alluvial soils at the foot of the cordillera. The whole region is presented on our Valle de Uco page.

What is the difference between Serbal, Catalpa and Atamisque?

These are the estate's three ranges. Serbal brings together the fruit-driven wines, aged mainly in tank, to drink young. Catalpa goes up a notch: selected plots, old vines, around ten months in French oak. Atamisque is the pinnacle, with the longest ageing and wines that reward patience.

Which Atamisque Malbec should I choose?

For a simple meal or a barbecue with friends, the Serbal Malbec, juicy and floral. For a fine cut of beef, the Catalpa Malbec, from 80-year-old vines and aged twelve months in barrel. The Atamisque Malbec, denser, will keep for a few years. The other Malbecs in our cellar are on our Malbec page.

What is an Argentine Pinot Noir like?

At altitude, Pinot Noir keeps its finesse. The Serbal Pinot Noir offers raspberry, wild strawberry and a touch of forest floor, with supple tannins. It is aged in tank to preserve the fruit, and is closer to a Burgundy than to a classic Argentine red. Serve it at around 14 °C. See also our Pinot Noir section.

Is Argentine Viognier a good aperitif white?

Yes. The Serbal Viognier, hand-harvested at 1,300 m, combines the grape's aromas (apricot, white peach, white flowers) with a lemony acidity that keeps the palate fresh. It goes very well with aperitifs, sushi or ceviche. Discover our other Viogniers.

How long can Atamisque wines be kept?

The Serbal wines are best drunk within three to five years, for their fruit. The Catalpa Malbec, the Atamisque Malbec and the Atamisque Cabernet Sauvignon will keep five to ten years in a cool cellar. The Atamisque Assemblage and the Atamisque Chardonnay can go further. Store the bottles lying down, away from light, between 12 and 14 °C.

What to serve with an Argentine Malbec?

Grilled meat, first and foremost: entrecôte, rib of beef, wood-fired asado. Malbec also loves lamb, game, spicy dishes such as chili con carne, and pressed cheeses. The richer the dish, the higher you can go in the range, from Serbal to Catalpa and then Atamisque.

Does Atamisque make a sparkling wine?

Yes, the Vicomte de Rochebouet Extra Brut, a Chardonnay made using the traditional method, with a second fermentation in the bottle, as in Champagne. Very dry, it offers notes of white fruit and brioche. It goes with aperitifs, shellfish and sushi. Our other bubbles are gathered on our sparkling wine page.

Which Atamisque bottle should I give as a gift?

The Atamisque Assemblage, the top of the red range, is the safest gift for a lover of age-worthy wines. For a white wine lover, the Atamisque Chardonnay. For a shared discovery, a case of Catalpa Malbec. You can also put together a gift with our wine gift boxes.
