Fruity red wine: fruit before structure

166 fruity red wines, from €9.90

A fruity red brings ripe fruit to the forefront: blackberry, plum, black cherry, sometimes a candied note. The tannins are present but melted, the finish is round rather than tight. This is the profile that appeals most widely, and the one served when one does not know the tastes of the table.

Our 166 cuvées come primarily from Italy with 41 wines, from Spain with 25, then from the United States and South Africa equally with 20 each. Pinotage, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Grenache are the most common grape varietals.

The most widely-accepted profileRipe fruit, roundness, melted tannins: the one you serve when there are many at the table and tastes vary.
Italy and Spain in the lead41 Italian and 25 Spanish cuvées, followed by the United States and South Africa with 20 each.

Grape varieties that produce a fruity red wine

Fruitiness comes as much from the grape variety as from the climate and the aging process. A Chilean Merlot and a Tuscan Merlot do not produce the same fruit.

Our bias

Fruity does not mean sweet

This is the most common confusion. A fruity wine is almost always dry: there is no residual sugar, it's the aromatic intensity of ripe fruit that gives this impression of sweetness. True reds with residual sugar are a separate category, and there are only seven of them here.

This profile is also the most forgiving. Served a little too warm or a little too cold, opened without a decanter, it remains pleasant. This is what makes it the quintessential table red.

What we avoid

Industrial fruitiness, obtained using aromatic yeasts and aging on wood chips. It is recognizable by a scent of English candy and a short, sweet finish. The fruit of a good wine is more discreet on the nose and longer on the palate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What we're asked about fruity red

Does a fruity red wine contain sugar?

No, in the vast majority of cases it's dry. The sweet impression comes from the intensity of the ripe fruit and the alcohol. Genuinely sweet reds are in sweet reds, and we only have seven of those.

Is this a good choice for a large group?

Yes, it's the most widely accepted profile. It doesn't offend anyone, it's very accommodating, and it remains good even when served roughly.

What's the difference with a full-bodied red?

Fruity describes the aromatic profile, full-bodied describes the power. A wine can be both, like a California Zinfandel. A fruity red on its own has melted tannins and a round finish.

Should it be decanted?

Rarely necessary. This is the most immediate profile: it gives its best upon opening. Decanting is mainly for tannic reds.

With pizza or pasta?

This is the classic pairing. The acidity of the tomato calls for a fruity and supple wine. Our pizza guide and lasagna guide detail the cases.
