MA Godello 2022

Located in the heart of the Bierzo region in northwestern Spain, the Michelini i Mufatto estate cultivates Godello grapes on steep, Atlantic-influenced slopes. The vines are planted in predominantly schist and clay-limestone soils, which impart a beautiful natural tension to the wines. The climate, characterized by moderate summers and cool nights, promotes slow ripening of the grapes and preserves their acidity. This combination of topography, poor soils, and cool temperatures gives the wines a precise, mineral, and elegant expression, emblematic of this mountainous part of Castile and León.

Michelini i Mufatto's MA Godello 2022 is made from hand-harvested Godello grapes, fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged on its lees in inert containers to preserve the aromatic purity of the grape variety and the expression of the terroir, before bottling without unnecessary intervention.

This wine reveals notes of white-fleshed fruit , stone fruit , and ripe citrus, complemented by delicate floral touches and a subtle mineral dimension. Discreet spicy and slightly smoky nuances emerge with aeration, adding depth and complexity. On the palate, the wine is ample yet taut, supported by precise acidity and a slightly glycerine texture, with a long, saline, and structured finish that highlights the purity of the Godello grape and the freshness of the terroir.

The history of wine in Spain is so ancient that no one really knows who first brought the vines to the region. Proud to have more land dedicated to vines than any other country, Spain is only now beginning to capitalize on this resource in a consistent way. A glance at a map reveals the climatic diversity among Spain's many wine regions, from the lush, green vineyards of Galicia on the northern Atlantic coast to the parched vineyards of the southeastern Mediterranean. Spain's saving grace for viticulture is the average altitude of its vineyards, which is over 600 meters. Many Spanish vineyards are thus able to produce grapes with good color and acidity simply because nighttime temperatures are relatively low and the grapes don't ripen until after a sufficiently long growing season. But there is a real treasure trove to be found for those willing to dig, and now that a class of connoisseurs has developed in Spain, all sorts of ambitious investors have done their part to change the image of Spanish wine. Today, a new generation of winemakers has quietly begun to craft spectacular wines and experiment with grape varieties that would have been unthinkable not so long ago. Wine remains an important commodity and an integral part of Spanish culture.
