Wines of Chile, the Colchagua Valley

Colchagua, Chile's valley of reds for ageing

16 bottles from Colchagua, from €11.80 to €79.40 each

Carménère is only truly itself where autumn lasts. It ripens nearly three weeks after Cabernet Sauvignon, and turns to green pepper as soon as it is picked too early. This valley, open from the Andes to the Pacific, gives it the long, dry season it needs.

Hence its reputation: reds for ageing, dark and fleshy on the valley floor, tighter on the granite slopes of Apalta and Marchigüe. Whites do exist, on the ocean side, but they remain the exception. Here is how to find your way around, area by area.

A Carménère without greennessThe region's long, dry autumn lets the grape variety finish ripening, which removes the green pepper notes it is criticised for elsewhere.
From the cordillera to the oceanThe same name covers granite slopes, a fertile alluvial valley floor and a windswept coastal fringe. Three climates, three ways of tasting the same grape variety.
Individually or in packsSeveral cuvées are offered in cases of six or packs of two bottles. The pack price is shown on the product page, before you add it to your basket.

The territory

The areas, from the cordillera to the Pacific

Some hundred kilometres separate the vines of the Andean foothills from those within sight of the ocean. The name on the label stays the same, but the wine in the glass changes completely.

The six areas of Colchagua, their soils, their dominant grape varieties and the style they produce.
SectorSoils and exposureGrape varietiesWhat it looks like
Apalta Slopes, heart of the valleyDecomposed granite over clay, a south-facing amphitheatre, free-draining slopes Carménère, Cabernet SauvignonThe country's most sought-after site: slow ripening, tight tannins, long ageing potential.
Los Lingues Andean foothills, to the eastAndean pebbles and colluvium, poor soils, nights cooled by mountain air Cabernet Sauvignon, SyrahStraight reds with marked acidity and strict black fruit.
Cunaco and Santa Cruz Valley floorDeep alluvium from the Tinguiririca, clay silts, a warm, sheltered plain Malbec, Carménère, ChardonnayThe backbone of production: generous fruit, supple tannins, wines enjoyable young.
Peralillo Where the valley narrowsStony terraces and granite slopes, a corridor for the sea breeze Carménère, Syrah, Petit VerdotHot days, cooled afternoons: spicy reds that keep their tension.
Marchigüe and Lolol Coastal RangeIron-rich red clays over granite bedrock, a dry, windswept plateau Cabernet Sauvignon, CarménèreConcentration and firm tannins, with a freshness the plain cannot reach.
Paredones and Pumanque Coastal fringeSands and weathered granite twenty kilometres from the Pacific, morning fogs Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot NoirThe cool side: saline whites and light reds, far from wines for ageing.

Chile's official zoning places each plot in Andes, Entre Cordilleras or Costa. It is the most useful key to reading a label.

What our Colchagua estates offer

Some fifteen bottles in our shop bear the name of this valley. One house supplies the largest share, and a few others complete the selection at the top end.

Our take

Why these reds age so well

Three factors explain the style. The cordillera first: at night, cold air flows down from the Andes and drops the temperature by fifteen degrees, which preserves acidity and colour. Granite next, on the slopes of Apalta, Peralillo and Marchigüe, a poor, free-draining soil that curbs vigour and tightens the tannins. The ocean last, which comes up the Tinguiririca corridor late in the day and cuts the heat.

Carménère needs all three at once. That is the reason for this page, and what sets it apart from the Central Valley as a whole.

Reading a Chilean label

Since 2011, a zone designation can be added to the name of the valley: Andes for the foothills, Entre Cordilleras for the plain, Costa for the maritime fringe. Between two bottles bearing the same word Colchagua, this designation tells you which will be the fresher. The name of a lieu-dit, Apalta for example, plays exactly the same role.

Frequently Asked Questions

What we are asked about Colchagua

Where exactly is the Colchagua Valley?

It forms the southern half of the Rapel basin, one hundred and eighty kilometres south of Santiago. It stretches from east to west for about a hundred kilometres, from the Andes to the hills bordering the Pacific. The full picture is on our wines of Chile page.

What is Apalta and why does the name come up so often?

Apalta is an amphitheatre of slopes at the heart of the valley, on the north bank of the Tinguiririca. Its south-facing slopes of decomposed granite prolong ripening and give concentrated yet taut reds. It is the most renowned lieu-dit in the country for Carménère: Santa Rita and Neyen Vineyards source their cuvées there.

Is the Carménère from here different from others?

Carménère ripens late, sometimes into May, and keeps green pepper notes if it lacks heat at the end of the season. The valley's dry autumn gives it that time. The result is a dark red with round tannins, with plum and cocoa. See also our Carménère wines.

Which bottle should I start with?

Viu Manent's Estate Reserva and Secret cuvées, between €11.80 and €15.80, give an accurate idea of the style without much outlay. For a more structured food wine, the Gran Reserva Carménère at €16.80 or a Single Vineyard at €29.80 show what the hillside adds.

How long can these wines be kept?

The entry-level wines are drunk within two to four years, for their fruit. Single-plot Carménères and hillside blends, such as Pewen de Apalta or Espíritu de Apalta, will keep for eight to fifteen years in a cellar at around twelve degrees, away from light.

Should I decant, and at what temperature should I serve?

Serve the reds between sixteen and eighteen degrees, no higher: beyond that, the alcohol takes over. An hour in a decanter helps cuvées for ageing that are still young, those from Apalta in particular. The whites and the rosé are served between eight and ten degrees, taken out of the fridge a quarter of an hour beforehand.

Which dishes with a red from this valley?

Carménère loves grilled meat, lamb, dishes spiced with cumin or mild chilli, and hard cheeses. Foothill Cabernet Sauvignon calls for a cut of beef. Malbec, suppler, goes very well with grilled vegetables and a pork chop.

Are whites also made in Colchagua?

Yes, but they remain a minority and come mainly from the western part, the coolest. Our selection includes a few: a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay and a Sémillon. For tauter Chilean whites, look towards Casablanca and Leyda or Limarí and Elqui.

Why are some cuvées only offered in packs?

The two options are not restocked at the same pace. When the single bottle is sold out, the page only offers the pack of two or the case of six, whose price is shown before you add it to your basket. Pewen de Apalta remains available in both formats.

How does it differ from other Chilean valleys?

It is the valley of reds for ageing: warmer than Casablanca, more focused on Carménère than Aconcagua and its Cabernets, less marked by old grape varieties than Itata. On the other side of the Andes, Argentina plays a different card, that of high-altitude Malbec.
