The aromatic white of the Castilian plateau

Verdejo from Rueda, a lively white born at altitude

6 bottles of Verdejo, from easy-drinking white to solera

A fresh, fragrant white that holds its own at the table: that is what you are looking for here. Verdejo ripens on the high plateau of Rueda, between 700 and 850 metres, where cold nights preserve the grape's acidity and aromas. On the nose, citrus, fennel and cut grass; on the palate, a slightly bitter finish, the grape's signature.

The selection runs from everyday Verdejo, at €15.50 per bottle, sold singly, to the natural wines of Bodegas Menade, and on to Adorado, a Verdejo aged in a solera like an old sherry.

Our take

Verdejo has two memories

Since the 1970s, Rueda has made its name with lively whites, harvested at night and cold-fermented. This is the Verdejo served at the bar, and we keep some very good ones, at gentle prices.

Before that, the region aged its whites in barrels and in a solera, in the manner of Jerez: they were called Rueda Dorado. Adorado, from Bodegas Menade, keeps this memory alive. Between the two, we have chosen Verdejos made the natural way, at Menade and at Barco del Corneta, which show a grape capable of texture and ageing. Taste all three faces and you will read Verdejo differently.

Serving a Verdejo

A young Verdejo is served between 8 and 10 °C, in a classic white wine glass. The cuvées aged on the lees, such as Barco del Corneta or Sobrenatural, express themselves better at around 11 or 12 °C, after some time in a carafe. Adorado is drunk at 13 or 14 °C, in a tulip glass, like an amontillado: once opened, it keeps for several weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What we are asked about Verdejo

What is Verdejo wine?

Verdejo is a white grape from northern Spain, king of the Rueda appellation, in Castile and León. It gives dry, aromatic wines with notes of citrus, fennel and fresh herbs, and a slightly bitter finish reminiscent of almond. At altitude, it keeps a fine acidity. Discover our white wines to compare it.

What is the difference between Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc?

Both share notes of herbs and citrus, hence their frequent blending in Rueda. Sauvignon is sharper and more vegetal, with aromas of boxwood and grapefruit. Verdejo has more richness, a rounder texture and that touch of bitterness on the finish. To compare, browse our Sauvignon Blanc selection.

Is Verdejo a dry or a sweet wine?

Verdejo from Rueda is a dry white wine. Its perfume and richness sometimes give an impression of sweetness, but the residual sugar remains very low. Verdejos aged in a solera, such as Adorado, are dry too: their richness comes from the time spent in barrel, with aromas of walnut and spice.

What should you serve with a Verdejo?

Young Verdejo goes with the aperitif, tapas, shellfish, sushi and grilled white fish. The cuvées aged on the lees go well with chicken in cream sauce, fish in sauce or roasted vegetables. A solera Verdejo is best kept for aged cheeses, spicy cooking or the end of the meal.

Where is the Rueda region?

Rueda is an appellation in Castile and León, south of Valladolid, on the plateau crossed by the Duero. The vines grow between 700 and 850 metres, on soils of sand, gravel and pebbles. The continental climate, with hot summers and cold nights, preserves the freshness of the grapes. More details on our appellations page.

How long can you keep a Verdejo?

A young Verdejo such as Valdrinal's Verdejo Santa Maria is best drunk within two to three years, for its fruit. The cuvées aged on the lees or from old vines, such as Sobrenatural 2016, last five to ten years and gain complexity. Adorado, aged in a solera, keeps beyond ten years and stays stable once opened.

What is a solera-aged Verdejo?

The solera is a system of stacked barrels from which the oldest wine is drawn and replaced with younger wine, as in Jerez. Rueda practised this oxidative ageing long before the fashion for lively whites. Adorado from Bodegas Menade is its heir: a saline, deep white, €112 per bottle, sold singly.

Verdejo or Albariño, which to choose?

Verdejo comes from the continental plateau of Castile: it is fuller, more herbaceous, with a bitter finish. Albariño grows in Galicia, on the Atlantic coast: more floral and more saline, it calls for oysters and seafood. For grilled fish, both work. Find Albariño on our Galician wines page.

Which Verdejo to choose for under €20?

Two bottles fit this budget. The Verdejo Santa Maria 2023 from Valdrinal, lively and floral, at €15.50 per bottle, sold singly. And Cucú 2022 from Barco del Corneta, an organic Verdejo with citrus notes, at €15.90 per bottle, by the case of 6. Both shine at the aperitif.

What is a natural Verdejo?

It is a Verdejo made with minimal intervention: organic grapes harvested by hand, fermentation with native yeasts, reduced or no sulphur. The wine gains in texture and individuality. Nosso 2021 from Bodegas Menade is a good example, at €23.80 per bottle, by the case of 6. See also our natural wines.
