Domaine Dubois: twelve Burgundy cuvées to choose from

12 bottles, from €22.00 to €195.00

Domaine Dubois is the most represented Burgundy producer in our shop: twelve bottles, ten reds and two whites, all Pinot Noir or Chardonnay, all available individually. Nine come from the Côte de Nuits, two from Savigny-lès-Beaune in the Côte de Beaune, and one bears the regional appellation Bourgogne Côte d'Or. Prices range from €22.00 to €195.00, the median is €49.90, and the vintages on sale span 2019 to 2023.

What the product pages say about the producer comes down to three points: it is a family business, its know-how is passed down from generation to generation, and its winemaking combines traditional methods and modern tools, plot by plot. The entry-level cuvée comes from old vines, which is still rare at this price level. The rest of the range climbs step by step, from village wines to premier cru, then to grand cru.

The range

The whole range, from entry level to grand cru

Six steps are enough to read the estate's production. You start with a regional red at €22.00, go through the Hautes-Côtes and then the Côtes de Nuits Villages, and arrive at the village Nuits-Saint-Georges before the premiers crus and the grand cru. At each step, the appellation area shrinks and the price rises.

Six Domaine Dubois cuvées ranked by increasing price, with their appellation level, their profile and their price per bottle.
VintageAppellation levelWhat she givesPrice

Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Blanc 2022Chardonnay, high-elevation vinesRegional Hautes-Côtes appellation A taut white, born of a cool climate and limestone soils €24.00
Côtes de Nuits Villages Rouge 2021Pinot Noir, clay-limestone soilsVillages More substance than the regional wine, the first real step up €29.90
Nuits-Saint-Georges Rouge 2023Pinot Noir, village appellationVillage The mid-range, deep and structured, at the selection's median price €49.90
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Porets St Georges 2020Pinot Noir, classified climatPremier cru A named plot, a structure made for waiting €99.90
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2019Pinot Noir alone, a plot classified as grand cruGrand cru The top of the selection, powerful and nuanced, a bottle for ageing €195.00

The gap from €22.00 to €195.00 does not come from a change of grape variety: all the reds are Pinot Noir, the two whites Chardonnay. It comes from the size of the delimited area and the fame of the name on the label. The cheapest premier cru in the selection is the Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru Les Narbantons 2022 at €55.00, which is €44.90 less than the two Nuits-Saint-Georges premiers crus listed at €99.90.

Where the vineyards are

Six ways into the estate's vineyards

The twelve bottles are spread over two areas, mainly the Côte de Nuits and Savigny-lès-Beaune in the Côte de Beaune, with the Hautes-Côtes holding the high ground. Here is where to start depending on what you are looking for.

Dinner's ready

Which dish for each bottle

These cuvées are Burgundy Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays: they are matched with sauces and textures, not with very spicy meat. The table links each price level to a specific use.

Matching six types of dish with the Domaine Dubois cuvée that suits them, with its price.

Festive meal, slow-cooked game Rare occasionClos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2019 The only grand cru in the Dubois cellar, and the oldest vintage €195.00

A simple rule in this range: the longer and more concentrated the sauce, the higher you go in the appellations. The Bourgogne Côte d'Or 2022 is served slightly chilled, while the premiers crus and the grand cru call for a decanter and a dish that can hold its own.

Our take

A premier cru is not always the right buy

In this range, the most rewarding step is not where you would expect it. The Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru Les Narbantons 2022 costs €55.00. The two Nuits-Saint-Georges premiers crus, Clos des Argilières and Les Porets St Georges, both 2020, cost €99.90. Same hands, same grape variety, same classification rank. What separates these prices is the fame of the village, not the level of work in the vineyard.

The other pleasant surprise is at the bottom of the table. The Bourgogne Côte d'Or 2022 at €22.00 is described as coming from old vines, which brings concentration and usually costs more. At this price, it is the bottle with which we recommend discovering the producer's signature before spending €99.90 or €195.00.

As for the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2019 at €195.00, it does not replace the others; it crowns the range. Opened on its own, without having tasted the village wine at €49.90, it will not tell you much about the house. Opened afterwards, it shows what this estate does when the plot gives it the most.

Three pointers before ordering

Start at €22.00. The old-vine regional wine gives you the house style without a big budget.

Step up to €55.00. The Savigny premier cru remains the cheapest way into a classified climat from this producer.

Median €49.90. That is the price of the 2023 Nuits-Saint-Georges village, half the price of its premier cru neighbours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What we are asked most often

Who is Domaine Dubois?

It is a family-run Burgundy estate, whose product pages state that its know-how is passed down from generation to generation. It works with the region's two classic grape varieties, Pinot Noir for its ten reds and Chardonnay for its two whites. Its winemaking combines traditional methods with more recent techniques, cuvée by cuvée.

Where are the estate's vineyards?

Most are in the Côte de Nuits: Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, Côtes de Nuits Villages, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée and Clos de Vougeot, making nine of the twelve bottles. Two cuvées come from Savigny-lès-Beaune, in the Côte de Beaune. The last bears the regional appellation Bourgogne Côte d'Or.

Which bottle should I start with?

With the Bourgogne Côte d'Or Vieilles Vignes Rouge 2022 at €22.00, the most affordable wine in the selection and the only one described as old-vine. It gives the house style without a big outlay. If you are looking for a white, the Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Blanc 2022 at €24.00 plays the same role.

Why do prices range from €22.00 to €195.00?

Because the selection covers four appellation levels from a single producer. The smaller and more renowned the delimited area, the more expensive the bottle: a regional appellation covers a broad territory, a grand cru a specific plot. The grape variety, however, does not change; all the reds are Pinot Noir.

What is the difference between Hautes-Côtes de Nuits and Côtes de Nuits Villages?

The Hautes-Côtes are the vineyards located higher up, behind the main slope, with a cooler climate and limestone soils, which gives straighter, lighter wines. The Côtes de Nuits Villages come from the slope itself, on clay-limestone, with more substance. With this producer, the difference also shows in the price: €24.00 versus €29.90.

Does the estate make white wines?

Yes, two out of twelve, both Chardonnay from the 2022 vintage. The Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Blanc is €24.00, the Côtes de Nuits Villages Les Monts de Boncourt Blanc €33.00. The other ten wines are reds.

Should you pay €99.90 for a Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru?

Not necessarily. The Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru Les Narbantons 2022 is also a premier cru from the same estate, at €55.00. The two 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges premiers crus, Clos des Argilières and Les Porets St Georges, cost €99.90 partly because of the fame of their village. Choose them if it is these particular climats you want to taste.

How long can these bottles be kept?

As a general rule, a regional or village-level Pinot Noir is drunk in its first few years, while a premier cru or grand cru can be kept considerably longer. The estate's technical sheets give no precise drinking window, and we will not invent one. Remember the order: the €22.00 bottle is for drinking now, the €195.00 one can wait.

Is the estate certified organic?

The product descriptions mention no certification. They speak of responsible, meticulous viticulture, and of sustainable practices for one cuvée, but that is not equivalent to an official label. Until the producer sends us proof, we do not describe these wines as organic.

Can I order a single bottle?

Yes, all twelve wines are available individually, with no obligation to buy by the pack or by the case. So you can put together your own vertical of the range, for example the regional wine at €22.00, the village wine at €49.90 and a premier cru. Each bottle is wedged separately in the packaging.
