Bottle of wine

Le point de vue du Baroudeur

The wine bottle is much more than a simple container: it's a veritable jewel case that preserves and enhances the wine's aromas. Available in various sizes (from the traditional 75 cl to magnums and other large formats), it plays a key role in the preservation and aging of wine.

The choice of material (tinted or clear glass), shape (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Alsatian flute, etc.), and closure (cork, screw cap, glass) directly influences the wine's development. Whether you're a wine connoisseur or a collector, each bottle tells a story and reflects the authenticity of a terroir.

Why is the 75 cl format the standard?

Several theories attempt to explain why the 75 cl wine bottle became the standard. Some suggest it was the ideal size for properly storing wine. Others explain that, during the British Empire, this size was favored because a case of six 75 cl bottles corresponded precisely to one gallon of wine, thus facilitating trade.

The different sizes of wine bottles

  • 37.5 cl: Half-bottle or Fillette
  • 75 cl: Standard bottle
  • 1.5 L: Magnum
  • 3 L: Double Magnum (or Jeroboam in Champagne)
  • 4.5 L: Rehoboam (in Champagne) / Jeroboam (in Bordeaux)
  • 6 L: Methuselah (in Champagne) / Impérial (in Bordeaux)

Each format has its uses, particularly for aging wine, preserving aromas and special occasions. 🍷
