Harvested at night, it spends 14 months in old barrels and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Red cherry, redcurrant, pomegranate, lavender and white pepper: the profile is fresher than the usual image of California. Second for its staying power, announced at 15 years and more, at €110.00 a bottle.

On the palate, red and black fruit, violet, a silky texture, fine tannins and a slightly saline finish. It takes third place because it shows another side of the grape, tauter and more mineral than New World Pinots. €101.50 a bottle, with an ageing potential of 5 to 10 years.

Around 30 days of maceration, then nearly 20 months in French barriques, a good share of them new. Raspberry, black cherry, rose, bitter orange, cedar and graphite. Oakier and denser than Block 5, it needs a few years in the cellar and will keep for 10 years or more. €77.40 a bottle, sold in sets of 2.

Tolpuddle's Pinot Noir is the finest gateway to Tasmania in this ranking: its Coal River Valley vineyard, planted in 1988 south-east of Hobart, enjoys a cool maritime climate that draws out ripening. Berries and whole bunches ferment together, then the wine spends ten to eleven months in French oak barrels. Black cherry, raspberry and plum on a lively frame. Next to the New Zealanders in the ranking, it offers brighter fruit and shorter ageing. €71.00 a bottle, sold in sets of 2, with 10 years' ageing potential or more.

    6. Hamilton Russell - Pinot noir - 2023

Hamilton Russell's Pinot Noir is the South African classic of this ranking: the estate, one of the southernmost in Africa, farms the cool Hemel-en-Aarde valley, behind Hermanus, right by the ocean. The vines grow on stony soils rich in clay and slate. The wine spends 10 months in French oak barrels that have held one to four wines. Wild strawberry, raspberry, juniper, forest floor and mushroom: a very Burgundian profile. Rated for 15 years or more, it is the most affordable long-ageing Pinot in the ranking, at €55.00 a bottle.

    7. Crystallum - Bona Fide - 2024

Crystallum's Bona Fide is the sunniest of the South African Pinots in this ranking: €49.90 a bottle for a Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Noir from the Lötter family vineyard, pioneers of the vine in the valley. The grapes, 70% whole bunches, ferment with natural yeasts, then spend 11 months in barriques, 20% of them new. Candied cherry, red rose, smoky notes, then a textured, spicy palate. Sunnier than its neighbour Hamilton Russell, it drinks well today and will last 10 years or more.

    The finesse of Martinborough

    8. Kusuda - Pinot Noir - 2023

Kusuda's Pinot Noir is the Martinborough of finesse: its vines root in the gravels and silts of the old Ruamahanga river terraces, in the south of the North Island, under a cool, windy climate. Black cherry, raspberry, violet and sweet pepper. The palate is silky, carried by lively acidity and fine tannins. Next to Escarpment's Kupé, its regional neighbour, it plays lace rather than density. It is the most expensive bottle in the ranking, at €156.00, with 5 to 10 years' ageing potential.

    9. Domaine Nico - La Savante Pinot Noir - 2022

Domaine Nico's La Savante is the high-altitude Pinot Noir of this ranking: it comes from Gualtallary, in the Uco Valley, Mendoza, where the vines climb above 1,700 metres. Cool nights preserve the acidity. Partly whole bunches, native yeasts, then around 18 months in barrel, with little new oak. Pomegranate, cherry, raspberry, peony and pepper. It shows that Argentina can do more than Malbec. €60.00 a bottle, sold in sets of 2, to keep 5 to 10 years.

    10. Ziereisen - Jaspis Zipsin Pinot Noir - 2021

Ziereisen's Jaspis Zipsin is the German Pinot Noir of this ranking, a Spätburgunder from southern Baden: the vines surround Efringen-Kirchen, a few kilometres from the French and Swiss borders, on limestone and marl slopes overlooking the Upper Rhine. Native yeasts and long ageing on the lees in mostly used barrels. Black cherry, raspberry, dried rose, liquorice and a hint of smoke. It is the wine closest to the Burgundian spirit in this ranking, through its soil and its restraint. €84.00 a bottle, sold in sets of 2.

Our method

How we chose these 10 Pinot Noirs

For this ranking, the Le Baroudeur du Vin team tasted the Pinot Noirs in our cellar and kept those that best express their place. The first criterion is accuracy: a Central Otago must have the brightness of its continental climate, a Valais the tension of its slopes. Next comes the balance between fruit, acidity and oak, then ageing potential.

We also look at how consistent the estates are from one vintage to the next and at the price asked for what the wine delivers. This top 10 gives pride of place to the cool regions of the New World and to Alpine and Rhine Europe: Burgundies have their own section, and these 10 wines show what Pinot Noir can do elsewhere.

How to serve Pinot Noir

Serve it at 14–16 °C: cooler, it closes up; warmer, the alcohol takes over. Young, oaky wines such as the Kupé or Block 5 benefit from an hour in a decanter. Older Pinots open up directly in the glass. Choose a large, Burgundy-style glass that concentrates the aromas. In the cellar, keep bottles lying down, away from light, at around 12 °C.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask us about Pinot Noir

What is the best Pinot Noir?

In our ranking, it is Felton Road's Block 5, in Central Otago: a biodynamic plot in Bannockburn, of great precision, at €112.00 a bottle. The best Pinot Noir does, however, depend on your taste and budget. For a coastal, long-ageing profile, look at Occidental's Freestone; for the best value for money, Hamilton Russell's Pinot Noir, at €55.00 a bottle.

Which good Pinot Noir to choose for under €30?

The available wines in this ranking start at €55.00 a bottle, as they bring together site-driven cuvées built for ageing. For an everyday Pinot Noir, explore our Pinot Noir section and our selection of light red wines. Aim for the cool regions of Chile, Germany or the regional appellations of Burgundy: they give fruity Pinots to drink in their first few years.

What are the best regions for Pinot Noir?

Pinot Noir loves cool climates, where it ripens slowly. Burgundy remains its homeland. Elsewhere, it shines in Central Otago and Martinborough in New Zealand, on the Sonoma Coast and in Oregon in the United States, in Tasmania, in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley in South Africa, in Germany, in Switzerland and in the heights of Mendoza. The styles table sums up their differences.

How long can you keep a Pinot Noir?

It depends on the wine. Occidental's Freestone and the Hamilton Russell are rated for 15 years or more; the Kupé, the Tolpuddle and the Bona Fide for 10 years or more. Block 5, the Kusuda, the Chappaz, La Savante and the Jaspis Zipsin are best enjoyed within 5 to 10 years. With age, a Pinot Noir built for ageing loses some of its fruit and gains notes of forest floor and mushroom.

At what temperature should you serve Pinot Noir?

At 14–16 °C. If the room is warm, put the bottle in the fridge for fifteen minutes. Too warm, a Pinot Noir seems heavy and alcoholic; at the right temperature, it keeps its freshness and fruit. Young, oaky wines benefit from an hour in a decanter; older wines open up in the glass.

What food goes with Pinot Noir?

Pinot Noir goes with tender meats and dishes with forest-floor flavours: duck breast with cherries, roast pigeon or quail, veal fillet with morels, mushroom risotto. The freshest versions, such as Domaine Nico's La Savante, can even match tuna tataki or grilled salmon. For cheese, choose hard Alpine cheeses or matured soft cheeses, with the Chappaz for example.

What is the difference between Pinot Noir and Spätburgunder?

It is the same grape: Spätburgunder is the German name for Pinot Noir. The German style has gained a great deal of depth over recent decades, particularly in Baden, the warmest region in the country. Ziereisen's Jaspis Zipsin, on limestone and marl near the Swiss border, is a fine example. Find the others in our Spätburgunder selection.

Pinot Noir or Gamay: what is the difference?

Both give light, fruity reds. Gamay, the grape of Beaujolais, offers crunchier fruit and softer tannins, and is generally drunk young. Pinot Noir, more demanding, needs cool climates and delivers more complex aromas: cherry, raspberry, then forest floor with age. For an easy-drinking red, Gamay; for a special meal, Pinot Noir.

Where are the Burgundies in this ranking?

This top 10 puts the spotlight on Pinot Noir outside its homeland: New Zealand, California, Switzerland, Tasmania, South Africa, Argentina and Germany. The wines of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune have their place in our Burgundy section. Comparing the two is an excellent exercise: serve the Hamilton Russell next to a similarly priced Burgundy, and judge for yourself.
