Rully: seven climats, from village to premier cru

8 bottles, from €26.00 to €32.00

Rully is a village appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise, south of the Côte de Beaune. Here, Chardonnay is in the majority: five whites to three Pinot Noir reds. The eight bottles fall within six euros of each other, from €26.00 to €32.00, with a median of €29.90. In other words, price will not help you choose: what changes from one bottle to the next is the climat, the colour and the estate.

Three estates share the selection: Duvernay with five cuvées, Domaine du Four Bassot with two, Domaine la Renarde with one. Seven different lieux-dits are represented, including two premiers crus, Rabourcé in white and Champs Cloux in red. If you are new to the region, this is the best way into Burgundy at this price level.

The name on the label

Seven climats, two appellation levels

In Rully, the name following the appellation is that of a specific plot, what Burgundy calls a climat. Two of them are classified premier cru; the other five are village appellation. Here is how the eight bottles break down, and what each level costs.

The eight Rully wines in the selection, sorted by climat, with their appellation level, colour, estate and price.
ClimateColour and grape varietyDomainPrice
Les Plantenays Village, 2023White, Chardonnay Domaine la Renarde €26.00
Les Cailloux and Cloux Louvrier Village, 2023, two cuvéesWhite, Chardonnay Duvernay €26.90
Meix de Pellerey Village, 2022Red, Pinot Noir Duvernay €26.90
Rabourcé Premier cru, 2022White, Chardonnay Duvernay €29.90
Champs Cloux Premier cru, 2023Red, Pinot Noir Duvernay €29.90
En Varot Village, 2023, white and redBoth colours Domaine du Four Bassot €32.00

At Duvernay, moving from village to premier cru costs exactly €3.00: €26.90 for Meix de Pellerey or Les Cailloux, €29.90 for Champs Cloux and Rabourcé. And the most expensive bottle on the page, En Varot at €32.00, is not a premier cru. Here, the label does not set the price; the estate does.

Dinner's ready

Five pairings, from fish to cheese

Rully whites are made in oak barrels, which gives them a little richness without erasing the freshness of the Chardonnay. The reds, driven by Pinot Noir, stay fruit-forward with a light structure. Here is how to spread them across a meal.

Five pairings between a dish, a bottle from the selection, its serving temperature and the corresponding section.
The dishThe recommended bottleTemperatureOur section
White fish, shellfish Simple cooking, butter or lemonA village white, Les Plantenays or Les Cailloux 10 to 12 °C White fish
Roasted poultry Cream sauce, mushroomsRabourcé, the white premier cru 11 to 12 °C White meat
Vegetarian plate Mushrooms, root vegetablesMeix de Pellerey, village red 14 to 15 °C Vegetarian dish
Leg of lamb Cooked pink, herbsChamps Cloux, the red premier cru 15 to 16 °C Lamb
Pressed cheese Comté or Beaufort styleEn Varot blanc, from Four Bassot 11 °C Pressed cheese

A simple rule for barrel-aged whites: take the bottle out of the fridge ten minutes before serving. Too cold, and the oak and texture disappear, leaving only the acidity.

Our take

Premier cru doesn't mean more expensive

People often buy a bottle of Burgundy by its ranking: village, premier cru, grand cru, and the budget follows. In this selection, that reflex does not work. The two premiers crus, Rabourcé in white and Champs Cloux in red, are €29.90. The two En Varot wines from Domaine du Four Bassot, simple village appellation, are €32.00. Ranking and price do not go in the same direction.

What sets the price here is the estate and its reputation. Duvernay makes five of the eight cuvées and occupies the whole lower half, from €26.90 to €29.90. Four Bassot is two euros more expensive, whatever the colour. Domaine la Renarde opens the selection at €26.00 with Les Plantenays, a white from a limestone climat. Out of a total spread of six euros, these three names explain almost everything.

Our advice: do not pay for the premier cru label as a guarantee of superiority; take it as information about the plot. If you want to try Rully with a single bottle, choose a white: it is the appellation's main colour, the one all three estates work with, and the one that explains why Rully is mentioned in the same breath as the Côte de Beaune. Keep the reds for a second purchase; they need a dish.

Three pointers before choosing

€26.00, the way in. Les Plantenays white from Domaine la Renarde, 2023 vintage, the least expensive of the eight and available individually.

€3.00, the step up to premier cru. That is the difference at Duvernay between a village wine at €26.90 and Rabourcé or Champs Cloux at €29.90.

€32.00, the ceiling. En Varot white and En Varot red, from Domaine du Four Bassot: same climat and same price in both colours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What we are asked most often

Where is the Rully appellation?

Rully is a village appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise, the Burgundy sub-region south of the Côte de Beaune. The eight bottles on this page all carry the Rully appellation. In our Côte Chalonnaise section, they sit alongside seven Mercurey and two Givry wines.

Is Rully a white or a red wine appellation?

Both, with a clear majority of white in our selection: five Chardonnay whites to three Pinot Noir reds. The contrast with Mercurey is striking, where we offer five reds out of seven bottles. If you are looking for a red from the Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey offers more choice.

How much does a bottle of Rully cost?

Between €26.00 and €32.00 on this page, with a median of €29.90. It is the tightest price range in our Burgundy selection: six euros separate the least expensive from the most expensive. By way of comparison, our Mercurey wines start at €33.00 and go up to €48.00.

Which Rully premiers crus do you offer?

Two, both from Domaine Duvernay and both at €29.90: Rabourcé in white, 2022 vintage, and Champs Cloux in red, 2023 vintage. The other six bottles are village appellation, which does not stop some of them from being more expensive.

Which estates are in this collection?

Three. Duvernay makes five cuvées, between €26.90 and €29.90. Domaine du Four Bassot makes two, the En Varot white and red, at €32.00 each. Domaine la Renarde makes one, Les Plantenays white, at €26.00.

What is a climat in Burgundy?

It is a defined, named plot whose name appears on the label after that of the appellation. This page brings together seven: Les Plantenays, Cloux Louvrier, Les Cailloux, Meix de Pellerey, Rabourcé, Champs Cloux and En Varot. En Varot appears twice, once in white and once in red.

Are there any sparkling wines in this collection?

No. The eight bottles gathered here are still wines, five whites and three reds, in the Rully appellation. If you are looking for bubbles, our Champagne section is the place to start.

Which grape varieties are used?

Chardonnay for the five whites, Pinot Noir for the three reds. It is Burgundy's classic duo, expressed here on mainly limestone plots according to the estates' technical sheets. The whites are all aged in oak barrels.

How long can these bottles be kept?

The vintages are recent: six bottles from 2023, two from 2022. A barrel-aged village white and a light Pinot Noir red are generally drunk within five years, with no need to wait. The two premiers crus can take a little more patience if your cellar has a stable temperature.

Can I buy a single bottle?

Yes, all eight wines are sold individually, in 750 ml format. Nothing on this page is reserved for purchase in packs. Orders ship within 72 hours, with each bottle securely wedged in its packaging.
