The best-stocked district in our South African range

Stellenbosch wine: the Cape classic

49 bottles, from €9.50 to €264

Stellenbosch is the historic heart of South African winemaking, and the place where wines for ageing have been made the longest. Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux blends, old bush-vine Pinotages: this is the most classic side of the Cape, the one that compares most directly with Europe.

A mountain range divides the district into a dozen sub-areas that do not ripen at the same pace. The table of wards explains what each one changes, and the table of estates what each house does best.

Where to start

Each leads directly to its selection.

Who does what

Nine houses, and what each does best

The district has hundreds of producers. We follow around twenty, and nine of them account for most of the range. The others amount to one or two bottles each, often the most expensive.

Stellenbosch estates represented in our cellar: speciality, price range and distinguishing feature.
DomainWhat it does bestPrice rangeWhat sets it apart
KanonkopSimonsbergPinotage for ageing, and Paul Sauer as a Bordeaux blend €18.50 to €264 The house that proved Pinotage could age. Bush vines, fermentation in open tanks, long ageing: the method has not changed in decades.
Glenelly EstateAt the foot of the SimonsbergLady May, Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot €16.80 to €49.95 The estate founded by the former owner of Château Pichon-Lalande. You can taste it: across five cuvées in a row, none is oaked beyond reason.
Damascene Plots bought on graniteA single-varietal range: Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sémillon, Chenin €58 Four cuvées, one price. Each comes from a terroir chosen for a given grape variety, offering a rare reading of the district at consistent quality.
Hartenberg Bottelary HillsSyrah, on ferruginous gravels and clay €37.80 to €78 Gravel Hill comes from a single plot of red gravel. It is the most Rhône-like estate in our selection, peppery and smoky rather than jammy.
Descendants of Sinai Helderberg sideOld-vine Cinsault and Pinotage, Chenin on granite €29.80 to €51.80 The natural side of the district: native yeasts, neutral barrels, gentle extraction. The reds here are paler and more saline than elsewhere in Stellenbosch.
Stark-Condé Jonkershoek ValleyThe Three Pines Syrah, and a white field blend €24.40 to €47.80 An amphitheatre of mountains closes off the valley and delays ripening. The wines keep an acidity the rest of the district rarely achieves.
Jordan Estate Slopes facing False BayThe Nine Yards Chardonnay, and an entry-level Chenin €17.80 to €71.80 Two bottles that frame the range: one shows what Cape Chardonnay gives when no expense is spared, the other costs less than twenty euros.
Stellenrust South of the districtThe two Kleine Rust wines, a red and a white €9.50 and €10.50 The two lowest prices on the page. A Pinotage–Syrah blend and a Chenin–Sauvignon, made for weekday drinking, not for the cellar.
False Bay Grapes bought in the Coastal RegionOld-vine Chenin and unoaked Chardonnay €10.90 Waterkloof's accessible range, fermented with native yeasts and with no inputs other than sulphur. At this price, the ratio between method and outlay is unbeatable.

Add to that a few one-off but weighty bottles: Boekenhoutskloof's Cabernet at €59.90, Beeslaar's Pinotage at €66, and Morgenster's Lourens River Valley at €29, a Bordeaux blend made with the help of Pierre Lurton.

The relief

What the division into wards changes in the glass

A district of this size cannot be tasted as one block. Between a plot planted in the shade of the Jonkershoek and another exposed to the wind from False Bay, there is more difference than between two neighbouring appellations in France.

Sub-zones of the Stellenbosch district: relief, soils, dominant grape variety and effect on the wine.
Sub-zoneRelief and soilFavourite grape varietyWhat it changes in the glass
Simonsberg North-eastern slope of the districtSlopes of decomposed granite and red clay, moderate altitude, good drainage Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage The area for wines built to age. The tannin arrives ripe but tight, and the fruit stays black rather than jammy. Kanonkop and Glenelly are based here.
Jonkershoek A narrow valley closed off by the mountainA sheltered amphitheatre, high plots, granite and clays Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah The shade of the ridges delays ripening by one to two weeks. The result is the district's most taut wines, those of Stark-Conde for example.
Helderberg Facing False Bay, to the southSlopes exposed to the sea, decomposed granites and clayey sands Cinsault, Cabernet Franc, Chenin The sea wind and cool nights produce paler, saline reds with less alcohol. A name in common use rather than an official designation on the label.
Bottelary North-western hillsFerruginous gravels, clays and sands on granite bedrock Syrah, Pinotage Poor soils that naturally limit vigour. Syrah gains pepper and a firm framework here, without heaviness: this is Hartenberg's territory.
Devon Valley A small valley west of the townLow hills, deeper clays, larger water reserves Merlot, Pinotage Clay retains water and rounds out the wines. The reds are suppler here, ready sooner, less built for long ageing.
Polkadraai South-west, the closest to the oceanWindswept slopes, sands and granite, direct maritime influence Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin The lowest average temperatures in the area. This is where the liveliest whites and the lightest reds come from.

These names do not always appear on the label: many estates prefer to claim the whole district, which is easier to read for export. The absence of a sub-zone is therefore not a bad sign.

Our take

We chose as many whites as reds here

Stellenbosch has a reputation as red wine country, and it is deserved. Yet of our forty-four bottles, twenty are white and twenty-three red. This near-even split is a choice: old-vine Chenins and Chardonnays from here have progressed faster than the Cabernets over the last fifteen years, and they remain much cheaper.

For the reds, we have favoured two families rather than broad coverage: Bordeaux blends, from Glenelly to Morgenster, and seriously made Pinotages, from Kanonkop to Scions of Sinai. The generic mid-range, the kind that fills British supermarket shelves, we have left aside. The median price of the range is €32.45, which says a good deal about where the selection sits.

Reading a Cape label

WO, for Wine of Origin, is the South African system of origin. It nests three scales: the region (Coastal Region), the district (Stellenbosch) and the ward (Simonsberg, Jonkershoek). The more specific the designation, the smaller the area.

Estate Wine guarantees that the grapes were grown, vinified and bottled on a single registered property. It is the closest equivalent to the French “mis en bouteille au domaine” (estate-bottled).

Cape Blend has no legal definition. By convention, it refers to a Bordeaux or Rhône blend containing a significant proportion of Pinotage.

The Wine Wanderer Team

Frequently Asked Questions

What we are asked about the Stellenbosch vineyards

What is a Cape Blend?

A South African red blend containing a significant proportion of Pinotage, alongside Bordeaux or Rhône grape varieties. The term has no legal definition: it is a matter of convention, and each estate sets its own proportion. Kanonkop's Kadette Cape Blend, at €18.50, is the most widely available example in our range.

What sets Stellenbosch apart from the rest of the Cape?

Three things. First, history: this is where the South African wine industry took shape, and where the historic estates are based. Second, the terrain, with mountains that bring altitude and freshness, whereas Swartland is flat and hot. Finally, style: here the aim is Cabernet-based reds for ageing, while Swartland works with Syrah and Chenin and Hemel-en-Aarde is devoted to Pinot Noir.

Are Stellenbosch Cabernets as good as a Bordeaux?

They play the same game, with the same grape varieties and the same ageing. The profile differs slightly: the fruit is riper, the graphite note more pronounced, and the wine is often ready to drink sooner. At comparable quality, the price gap remains wide in the Cape's favour. Glenelly's Lady May at €49.95 stands up to Bordeaux crus that cost more.

What budget should you allow for a Stellenbosch wine?

The range starts at €9.50 and the median is €32.45. Fifteen bottles are under twenty euros, which is plenty for everyday drinking. Between €25 and €50, you will find the serious cuvées from the great estates. Beyond that, you enter the territory of select Pinotages, up to €264 for Kanonkop's Black Label.

What is Kanonkop?

The district's most renowned estate, located on the slopes of the Simonsberg. It built its reputation on Pinotage at a time when nobody believed in the grape, with bush vines and fermentation in open tanks. We stock five of its bottles, from the Kadette at €18.50 to the Black Label at €264, by way of Paul Sauer, its Bordeaux blend.

Does Pinotage deserve its bad reputation?

Not really any more. This cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsault, created in 1925, long produced hard wines marked by a paint-like note, for lack of ripeness and care. From old bush vines, with gentle extraction, it now gives deep, spicy reds capable of lasting ten years. The difference lies with the producer, not the grape.

How do you read a ward on a label?

The WO system nests three levels: region, district, then ward. A bottle bearing only the name Stellenbosch claims the whole district. One bearing Simonsberg-Stellenbosch or Jonkershoek Valley designates a specific sub-zone, and therefore a narrower origin. Many estates nevertheless stick to the district, which is easier to read for export.

What does the term Estate Wine mean?

It certifies that the grapes were grown, vinified and bottled on a single property registered with the South African authority. It is the closest equivalent to the French “mis en bouteille au domaine” (estate-bottled). Its absence says nothing about quality: several excellent producers buy their grapes plot by plot, such as Damascene.

Which bottles age best?

Bordeaux blends and the great Pinotages, first and foremost. A Paul Sauer or a Lady May needs a few years to open up and lasts around fifteen. Single-plot Syrahs, such as Hartenberg's Gravel Hill, follow the same curve. Conversely, unoaked Chardonnays and entry-level wines are best drunk within three years: their appeal is the fruit.

Are there good whites in Stellenbosch?

Twenty of our forty-four bottles are white, which partly answers the question. Old-vine Chenin gives wines of texture here, somewhere between apple, wax and dry honey; Chardonnay is lively and rarely over-oaked. The district also boasts a rare sweet wine, a botrytised Riesling from Villiera made only once, in 2005.
