Xynisteri Dry 2022Kamanterena
This dry white comes from vineyards spread across several villages in the Paphos region, in western Cyprus. The vines are grown on the slopes of the hinterland, where altitude and sea breezes temper the Mediterranean heat. Xynisteri, the island's indigenous white grape variety, keeps its freshness and liveliness here. The Kamanterena winery, nestled between the villages of Stroumbi and Polemi in the heart of the mountain vineyards, belongs to SODAP, a cooperative founded in 1947 by Cypriot winegrowers.
The Xynisteri grapes are harvested at full ripeness in the villages of the Paphos region, then brought to the Kamanterena winery, which has modern winemaking equipment. The wine follows classic white-wine vinification, with tank fermentation conducted so as to preserve the primary aromas and natural freshness of the grape variety. This style of winemaking highlights the brightness of the fruit and the liveliness of a Mediterranean white designed to be enjoyed in its youth.
This wine reveals notes of green apple, banana, lemon, grapefruit, pear, melon, white flowers and fresh grass. The fresh, expressive nose combines orchard fruit, exotic fruit and touches of citrus. The palate is fresh and fruity, pleasingly light, with a lively, crisp finish that calls for seafood.
Where are we traveling?
PaphosCyprus
Located at the western tip of Cyprus, the Paphos region is one of the island's historic cradles of the vine. Its vineyards rise in tiers from the coastal plains to the foothills of the Troodos massif, on slopes that often exceed 600 to 1,000 metres above sea level, around villages such as Stroumbi, Polemi, Kathikas and Panayia. The Mediterranean climate is hot and sunny, but altitude and sea breezes bring cool nights that preserve the grapes' acidity. The soils, often limestone and chalky, sometimes volcanic, are poor and well drained. As Cyprus has never been affected by phylloxera, many vines are still grown on their own roots. The region showcases indigenous grape varieties: Xynisteri for whites, Mavro and Maratheftiko for reds. The Pafos and Laona Akamas appellations frame a production that has combined cooperative tradition and a renewed focus on quality since the 2000s.
The little history of the country
Cyprus
The island is located 80 km off the southern coast of Turkey and a little further off the west coast of Syria. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. It measures 225 km from east to west. The Cypriot wine industry was at its peak in the Middle Ages and experienced a steady and gradual decline over the centuries that followed. The island's location once made it a useful port of call for voyages from Greece and Italy to Egypt and the Levant. Cyprus was of great use to medieval merchants and traders. Until the end of the 20th century, most local wines were made in the southern port towns of Paphos and Limassol. This meant that the fruits had to travel long distances in the Mediterranean heat and often in relatively primitive means of transport. Things have changed a lot now, with a new wave of winegrowers growing their own grapes and producing wines representative of their Cypriot terroir.
