Álvaro Palacios - La Baixada
One of Álvaro Palacios' jewels, combining intensity, elegance and complexity.
105.000 Ft / 750ml / 2021The most accomplished1. Álvaro Palacios - La Baixada
Álvaro Palacios's La Baixada is the most complete Grenache in this ranking: a single-plot Priorat wine, from 1.3 hectares set apart within the Finca Dofí vineyard. The vines, planted in 1996 on slate, were top-grafted with material from L'Ermita. A blend of 94% Grenache and 6% Carignan, fermented in foudres with the site's own yeasts, aged 20 months, bottled unfined and unfiltered. The nose opens on blackberry, blueberry, violet and white pepper. Offered in 2018, 2019 and 2021 at the same price, €277 a bottle.

Clos Mogador - Espectacle De Montsant 2022
A powerful Grenache from the Catalonian hillsides, at once robust, refined, and intensely expressive of the Montsant terroir.
51.700 Ft / 750mlThe great wine of Montsant2. Clos Mogador - Espectacle De Montsant - 2022
Clos Mogador's Espectacle is the great Grenache of Montsant, the appellation that surrounds Priorat. An old vineyard on steep slopes, on clay, limestone and stones, gives this pure Grenache at 15.5% alcohol, aged at length in large wooden vessels. The nose combines candied black fruit, plum, violet and dried rose, with garrigue and liquorice in the background. Compared with La Baixada, it plays sunny generosity rather than the tension of slate. 2022 vintage, to keep ten years and more, €136.40 a bottle.

3. The Sadie Family - Soldaat - 2024
The Sadie Family's Soldaat is the most refined Grenache in this ranking: a pure Grenache by Eben Sadie, from vines on decomposed granite, at just 13% alcohol. The hand-picked grapes ferment for a month in concrete with daily foot treading, then the wine spends a year in barrel. It tastes both delicate and concentrated, with remarkable length. Where the Catalans bet on power, it bets on tension. 2024 vintage, €77 a bottle, ageing potential of 10 to 15 years.

Torbreck - Hillside Vineyard Grenache 2021
Grenache at its best Australian expression
32.300 Ft / 750mlThe Barossa in finesse4. Torbreck - Hillside Vineyard Grenache - 2021
Torbreck's Hillside Vineyard shows the Barossa Valley in its freshest light: old bush-vine Grenache on the western slopes of the valley, dry-farmed on sand and clay-limestone. Fermented in open vats with native yeasts, then aged in old French oak foudres. The 2021 vintage offers red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and garrigue, a broad palate with powdery tannins and a saline finish. Sold out for now, it keeps its place for what it says about modern Australian Grenache.

Savage Wines's Thief in the Night is the Grenache to give to a Pinot Noir lover. It comes from the heights of the Piekenierskloof, from the same plot as Eben Sadie's Soldaat, on dry-farmed decomposed sandstone soils. Spontaneous fermentation with 20% whole bunches, ten months in foudre, light sulphuring. A nose of dried rose, strawberry, pomegranate and thyme precedes a concentrated, crunchy palate. For half the price of the Soldaat, it offers a closely related reading of the same place. 2023 vintage, €38 a bottle, in a set of 3.

Birichino's Besson Grenache is the Grenache with the oldest vines in this ranking: the Besson vineyard, in California, was planted in 1910. Natural fermentation, twelve months in old oak barrels, bottled unfiltered. The nose mixes wild strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, pomegranate and dried thyme, carried by fresh acidity and lovely minerality. It is the opposite of the heavy, oaky Californian cliché: a 13.5% wine, fragrant and precise. 2023 vintage, €49 a bottle.

Hand-harvested, partly whole-bunch, fermented in open vats, aged on fine lees in neutral barrels. It offers ripe raspberry, crunchy cherry, dried rose and white pepper. How we chose these ten Grenaches
The team tasted the Grenaches in our cellar and kept those that best express their place. First criterion: faithfulness to terroir, whether the slate of Priorat, the granite of the Cape or the altitude of Cafayate. Second criterion: balance, because Grenache ripens fast and can become heavy; we favoured wines where freshness stands up to alcohol.
Next come ageing potential, the estate's consistency from one vintage to the next, and price. A wine at €18 a bottle thus sits alongside a single-plot wine at €277: each is the best in its category. The final rank reflects the complexity and depth of each bottle.
How to serve Grenache
Serve Grenache between 15 and 17 °C: too warm, the alcohol dominates; slightly cool, the fruit comes through. The light wines of the Cape or Salta like 15 °C. Decant great young Priorats such as La Baixada for an hour. A glass with a wide bowl lets the garrigue and spices express themselves.

Grenache styles by origin
Grenache takes on the colour of its soil and climate. Catalan schist makes it dense, Cape granite makes it taut, Andean altitude makes it lively.

What we are asked about Grenache
What is the best Grenache?
In our ranking, Álvaro Palacios's La Baixada comes out on top: a slate plot in Priorat, grafted with material from L'Ermita, of great depth. The best Grenache nevertheless depends on your taste and budget: The Sadie Family's Soldaat will win over lovers of finesse, Vinos del Viento's Garnacha Old Vines the drinker looking for a weekday wine. The full ranking details each profile.
What is a good Grenache for under €30?
Two wines in the ranking stay below this threshold. Vinos del Viento's Garnacha Old Vines, old vines from Aragon, costs €18 a bottle, in a set of 6. El Porvenir's Pequeñas Fermentaciones Garnacha, from Salta in Argentina, costs €25 a bottle. The first is spicier and more generous, the second livelier and fruitier. All our other Grenaches are on the Grenache page.
Are Grenache and Garnacha the same grape?
Yes. Garnacha is the Spanish name for Grenache, and northern Spain, particularly Aragon, is its historic home. In Sardinia, it is called Cannonau. Priorat, Montsant, Navarra and Aragon make their finest reds from it, often blended with a little Carignan, like Álvaro Palacios's La Baixada with its 6% Carignan.
What are the best regions for Grenache?
The grape loves hot, dry climates and poor soils. Spain remains its homeland of choice with Priorat and Montsant. The southern Rhône and Roussillon make it the backbone of their blends. Outside Europe, South Africa's Swartland, McLaren Vale and the Barossa in Australia, California and the heights of Salta draw very different styles from it.
How long can a Grenache be kept?
It depends on the style. Fruity, tank-aged Grenaches, like El Porvenir's, are drunk within five years. The Australian and South African wines in the ranking last 5 to 15 years depending on the cuvée. The great wines of Priorat and Montsant, such as La Baixada or Clos Mogador's Espectacle, keep for ten years and more.
At what temperature should you serve a Grenache?
Between 15 and 17 °C for most Grenaches. Wines light in alcohol, like David & Nadia's at 13%, benefit from being served at around 15 °C. More powerful wines, like the Espectacle at 15.5%, can take 17 °C; above that, the alcohol takes over from the fruit. An hour in a decanter helps great young wines.
Which dish to serve with Grenache?
Grenache loves lamb in all its forms: herb-crusted leg, slow-cooked shoulder, grilled chops. It also goes with tagines and couscous, Iberian charcuterie and aged sheep's cheeses. The great wines of Priorat call for game or a civet. For more ideas, see our wines for lamb.
What is the difference between Grenache and Syrah?
Grenache gives wines with red fruit, garrigue and supple tannins, often high in alcohol. Syrah brings dark colour, black fruit, pepper and firmer tannins. The two are often blended, in the Rhône as in Australia. If you like tender, fragrant reds, go for Grenache; if you like structure, go for Syrah.
Does Grenache suit a Pinot Noir lover?
Yes, provided you choose a fresh style. Cape Grenaches, such as Savage Wines's Thief in the Night or The Sadie Family's Soldaat, offer the same transparency, the same scent of rose and small red berries. Birichino's Besson, in California, goes in the same direction. Our top 10 Pinot Noir complements this ranking.
