Etna: Sicily, to be drunk chilled, up to 900 meters
Reds and whites from the volcano, from €29.90Etna is an active volcano and a mountain vineyard. Vines climb its slopes up to 900 meters, growing in black sand, ash, and decomposed lava. They yield pale, taut red wines with fine tannins, unlike anything one would expect from a southern island.
The red grape variety is Nerello Mascalese, the white is Carricante, and the precise location here is as important as the name of the estate: each lava flow has a contrada name, and the northern slope does not produce the same wine as the south. For the island's other, warm and sunny side, everything is organized in the Nero d'Avola section and in our Sicilian wines.

Red, white, contrada: understanding a volcano label
Four references intersect on these bottles, and a fifth category eludes them. They indicate the grape variety, the slope, and sometimes the exact plot, which is the most useful information here.
| The notice | The grape variety | Where, and at what height | The style | In our cellar |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Etna Red Document | Nerello Mascalese, minimum 80%, supplemented by Nerello Cappuccio. | The north, south and southwest-facing slopes. Our plots range from 700 to 900 metres. | Light color, redcurrant, wild strawberry, dried herbs. Fine tannins and lively acidity. | Tenuta Monte Ilice 2018, Benanti Etna Rosso 2023 |
| Etna Bianco Document | Carricante, 60% minimum, with local grape varieties as a complement. | The entire perimeter of the volcano, with a historical pole on the eastern slope. | Citrus, orange blossom, Mediterranean herbs. A clean salinity and bitterness on the finish. | Barone di Villagrande 2024, Gaja IDDA white 2022 |
| Etna Bianco Superiore DOC, only one municipality | Carricante, minimum 80%. | Only around Milo, on the eastern side, facing the Ionian Sea. | The most taut and saline white wine from the volcano, built for aging. | Benanti Pietra Marina 2020 |
| District cadastral reference | Depending on the vintage, most often Nerello Mascalese alone. | A named and delineated lava flow, from the north to the south of the mountain. | Two plots, two slopes, one winemaker: the best way to measure the impact of exposure. | Benanti Calderara Sottana 2022 and Cavaliere 2022 |
| Sicilian Land Unclassified | Nerello Cappuccio alone, which the Etna Rosso specification prohibits. | Same slopes, north and southwest facing, up to 900 meters. | Softer and fruitier, without the tannic structure of Mascalese. | Benanti Nerello Cappuccio 2020, two bottlings |
Two vintages are awaiting their return and cannot be ordered: the Tenuta Monte Ilice Etna Bianco 2019, a Carricante from 700 meters, and the Barone di Villagrande Etna Rosso 2020, an 80% Nerello Mascalese blend aged eighteen months, twelve of which were in chestnut barrels.
Which dish for a volcanic wine
The previous table classifies bottles by designation. This one classifies them by use. Remember one thing above all: these reds are served chilled, never at room temperature.
| The dish | What we open | Why | A bottle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Appetizer, shellfish, raw fish | An Etna Bianco from Carricante | Blood orange, green apple, acacia flower, and no oak to get in the way. | Barone di Villagrande 2024, €155.40 for 6 |
| Grilled fish, seasonal vegetables | A white wine partially aged in wood | A little extra texture from the lees and the barrel, without losing the grape's tension. | Gaja Etna IDDA Bianco 2022, €138 for 2 |
| Fish in sauce, fresh sheep's cheese | A blank shift | Old vines from Milo, long aging on lees: this wine has the body and length it needs. | Benanti Pietra Marina 2020, €160 |
| Roast chicken, mushrooms, vegetable pasta | An entry-level Etna Rosso | Light color and fine tannins: it complements the dish instead of overpowering it. | Tenuta Monte Ilice 2018, €29.90 |
| Cold cuts, pizza, tomato pasta | A Nerello Cappuccio on its own | More supple and fruitier than the blend, it requires neither a decanter nor an elaborate dish. | Benanti Nerello Cappuccio 2020, €106.50 for 3 |
| Lamb, grilled red meat | A contrada red | The altitude preserves the acidity that cuts through the fat, and the foudre aging brings the rest. | Benanti Contrada Cavaliere 2022, €116 for 2 |
Serve whites between 10 and 12°C and reds at around 15°C. For Contrada cuvées, half an hour in a decanter is enough to open up the nose.

Our Sicilian winesSwitch to Nero d'Avola
The island's other red wine: dark, ripe, round. Nothing like what grows on the volcano, and that's precisely the point.
The Nero d'Avola section
An active mountain, almost translucent reds
When you arrive in Etna, you expect a dark and powerful wine, because it's a volcano and because it's Sicily. What you find is the opposite: a color so light you can see the bottom of the glass, a nose of redcurrant and dried herbs, an acidity that stands on its own. These are mountain wines, not Southern wines.
The explanation lies in the altitude and the soil. At 700 or 900 meters, nights remain cold even in August, maturation is extended, and the grapes retain their acidity. Volcanic sand, on the other hand, retains almost nothing: roots dig deep, yields are low, and the wine gains in definition what it loses in volume.
How do you choose
By slope and by contrada, before the vintage. From the same winemaker, two plots a few kilometers apart produce wines that no one would confuse.
And regarding the influence of wood. Nerello Mascalese has fine tannins: a new barrel would mask them in a few months. The cuvées that interest us are aged in large oak vats or tanks.

What we are asked about Etna wines
Which grape varieties go into an Etna wine?
For reds, Nerello Mascalese makes up at least 80%, supplemented by Nerello Cappuccio. For whites, Carricante makes up at least 60%, and 80% for the Superiore designation. These are three indigenous grape varieties found almost nowhere else.
How do these wines differ from the rest of Sicily?
By soil and by altitude. Elsewhere on the island, Nero d'Avola produces a dark, ripe, and round red on hills and plateaus. Here, Nerello Mascalese grows on volcanic sand at 700 meters and more, and yields a pale, taut wine with fine tannins. A detailed comparison can be found in our Nero d'Avola section, and our Sicilian wines bring both styles together.
What does contrada mean on a label?
This is a partial mention, the local equivalent of a "lieu-dit" (named place). Each contrada corresponds to a named lava flow, with its own age, granulometry, and exposure. On this mountain, this is the most useful information on the label, even before the vintage: our two Benanti 2022s come from Calderara Sottana in the north and Cavaliere in the south.
How high do the vines grow?
Our plots are located between 700 and 900 meters, which is very high for Mediterranean vines. At Tenuta Monte Ilice, the slopes reach 40%, which makes any mechanization impossible: everything is done by hand. It is this altitude that creates the temperature difference between day and night, and this difference that preserves the acidity.
Is an active volcano risky for grapevines?
Eruptions are frequent, but lava flows rarely reach the vineyards, which are located on ancient slopes. Ashfall, however, regularly renews the soil: this is what makes this black earth so poor in organic matter and so well-drained. The real daily risk remains climatic, as everywhere else.
What is Etna Bianco like?
Much, and it remains less known than the red. Carricante produces a dry, citrusy, saline white, with bitter notes on the finish and true aging potential. The pinnacle of the genre bears the "Superiore" designation, reserved for the commune of Milo on the eastern slope: this is where our Pietra Marina 2020 comes from.
Should they be decanted, and do they keep?
Half an hour in a decanter is enough for the contrada reds; nothing is needed for the entry-level cuvées. Serve the reds at around 15°C, and the whites between 10 and 12°C. For aging, count on five to eight years for the appellation reds and longer for the single-vineyard wines. Our Monte Ilice 2018 has already spent twelve months in tank then twelve months in bottle before sale: it is ready.
Why are there packs of two, three or six bottles?
Because the bottle alone is out of stock and we still have complete lots. The price shown is for the lot, never for a single bottle: €116 for two Benanti Contrada, €106.50 for three Nerello Cappuccio, €156 for six Etna Rosso. We indicate this everywhere on this page.
