Fermented in 500-litre barrels, aged 6 to 7 months on the lees with regular bâtonnage, it offers pear, white peach, fresh butter and flint. The palate is rich, held by vibrant acidity, with a long, mineral finish. It takes first place because it reconciles the breadth of a great white with the freshness that altitude brings. Hamilton Russell's Chardonnay is the longest-ageing wine in the ranking, a South African white built for fifteen years and more. The estate lies in the cool Hemel-en-Aarde valley, near Hermanus and the ocean, and is farmed organically and biodynamically. The wine ferments and ages for 9 months in French oak barrels of various ages. It offers acacia, lemon, peach, toasted hazelnut and brioche, on a round, linear palate with a saline finish. Compared with no. 1, it is more classic, close to a great white Burgundy. €49.90 a bottle.

Its 18 months in oak barrels give it notes of smoke, toast and biscuit, around lime, peach and apricot. The texture is unctuous, balanced by vibrant acidity. Broader than the Hamilton Russell, it remains the most affordable of the top three: €37.00 a bottle, in a set of 3. It will keep five to ten years.

    4. Far Niente - Chardonnay - 2023

Far Niente's Chardonnay is the most opulent in this ranking, a Napa Valley white from the Coombsville vineyards, a cool sector with volcanic and gravelly soils. The wine finishes its fermentation in French oak barrels, then ages 10 months on fine lees, half in new oak; malolactic fermentation is avoided to keep the tension. White fig, melon, honeysuckle, honey and toasted hazelnut make up a broad wine, at 14.5%. It embodies the great Californian style, richer than the Australians in the ranking. €119.90 a bottle, to keep for ten years and more.

    5. Crystallum - Clay Shales Chardonnay - 2024

Crystallum's Clay Shales is the Chardonnay closest to Burgundy in this ranking: a single-plot wine, on the Hemel-en-Aarde ridge, named after its clay and Bokkeveld shale soils. Native yeasts lead the fermentation, then the wine spends 10 months on the lees in old barrels and foudres. Lemon thyme, toasted oats, white peach, quince and oyster shell precede a round, taut palate. A neighbour of Hamilton Russell, it is more site-specific and more saline. €49.90 a bottle, to drink within ten years.

Shaw & Smith's Lenswood Vineyard is the most precise Chardonnay in this ranking, a single-vineyard cuvée from the Adelaide Hills, in South Australia, at around 400 metres altitude. Hand-picked, it ferments in oak barrels, 30% of them new, then ages 10 months on the lees. Williams pear, Granny Smith apple, lime and citrus peel shape a straight wine with well-integrated oak. The 2021 vintage is beginning to open up and will hold for ten more years. It shows cool-climate Australia, the opposite of Napa's rich style. €71.90 a bottle, in a set of 3.

    7. House of Arras - Blanc de Blanc

House of Arras's Blanc de Blanc is the only sparkling wine in the ranking: a Tasmanian Chardonnay made using the traditional method, with secondary fermentation in the bottle. The grapes come from cool coastal plots and ferment in stainless-steel tanks, then the wine rests for several years on the lees before a moderate dosage. Ripe citrus, green apple, white flowers and brioche notes make up a fine, lively mousse. It shows another facet of the grape, that of the great blanc de blancs, with the island's oceanic freshness. €39.80 a bottle, in a set of 3.

    8. Catena Zapata - Adrianna White Bones - 2023

Catena Zapata's Adrianna White Bones is the most mineral Chardonnay in this ranking, from the Adrianna vineyard in Gualtallary, in the upper Uco Valley in Mendoza, at around 1,450 metres. Its limestone soils, rich in marine fossils, give a taut, chalky wine. Whole-bunch pressed, fermented with native yeasts in mostly used French oak barrels, it undergoes partial malolactic fermentation. Citrus, orange blossom, honeysuckle and touches of ginger precede a straight palate. More austere than the El Porvenir, it needs time. €122.00 a bottle, for ten years of ageing.

    9. Garcés Silva - Amayna Chardonnay - 2022

Garcés Silva's Amayna is the most coastal Chardonnay in this ranking, grown in the Leyda valley, in Chile, about 13 kilometres from the Pacific. Whole-bunch pressed, it ages 12 months on fine lees, 60% in barrels and foudres, the rest in stainless-steel tanks. Guava, pear, yuzu, chalk, toasted cashew and flint lead to a long finish with notes of sea spray. It is the most maritime of the ten, straighter than the Dog Point. 10. Ten Minutes by Tractor - Estate Chardonnay - 2021

Ten Minutes by Tractor's Estate Chardonnay is the most saline white in the ranking, a wine from the Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne, in the state of Victoria. Its breezy plots, close to the Southern Ocean, combine clays, silts and volcanic sands. Fermented mostly in barrel with little new oak, it undergoes partial malolactic fermentation for its tension. Green apple, white peach and ripe lemon rest on notes of toasted hazelnut. More maritime than the Shaw & Smith, it rightly closes the ranking. €53.00 a bottle, in a set of 2.

Our method

How we chose these ten Chardonnays

The ranking starts from the cellar: the team tasted the Chardonnays in the shop and kept those that best express their place. First criterion, faithfulness to place: a high-altitude wine must show its freshness, a coastal wine its salinity. Then the balance between the richness that oak brings and the acidity that carries it.

Next come ageing potential, the estate's consistency from one vintage to the next and the price asked for what the wine offers. House of Arras is included because a blanc de blancs is still pure Chardonnay, seen from another angle. The final order reflects our taste preferences; each verdict explains what the wine brings to its place.

How to serve Chardonnay

Serve lively, coastal Chardonnays at around 10 to 11 °C, barrel-aged wines at around 12 to 13 °C: too cold, they close up. A glass with a wide bowl lets the notes of hazelnut and brioche come through. Great age-worthy wines benefit from half an hour in a decanter. The sparkling wine is served colder, at around 8 °C.

The styles

Chardonnay styles by origin

Chardonnay takes on the mark of its climate. Cool, coastal or high-altitude regions produce taut wines; warmer regions produce broad whites, often worked in barrel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask us about Chardonnay

What is the best Chardonnay?

In our ranking, no. 1 is El Porvenir's Alto de Los Cuises, a high-altitude Chardonnay from Salta, both rich and fresh. The best one nevertheless depends on your taste and budget: Hamilton Russell for ageing, Far Niente for a broad style, Garcés Silva for a saline wine at €32.00 a bottle. The full ranking details each profile.

Where can I find a good Chardonnay for under €30?

The available wines in this ranking start at €37.00 a bottle with the Dog Point, in a set of 3. For a tighter budget, the Mâconnais and South American Chardonnays offer some lovely bottles: browse all our Chardonnays or ask for advice.

What is the difference between a Chardonnay and a white Burgundy?

Chardonnay is a grape variety, white Burgundy an appellation. Almost all white Burgundies are made from Chardonnay, but the grape also grows in Australia, California and South Africa. A Burgundy expresses its limestone soils; a New World Chardonnay often shows riper fruit. See our Burgundies.

Which regions produce the best Chardonnays outside France?

Cool regions produce the most balanced wines: Hemel-en-Aarde in South Africa, the Adelaide Hills, Mornington and Tasmania in Australia, Marlborough in New Zealand, the heights of Mendoza and Salta in Argentina, the Leyda coast in Chile. The Napa Valley produces a broader style. The styles by origin table compares them.

How long can a Chardonnay be kept?

A lively, coastal Chardonnay is drunk within five years, like Garcés Silva's Amayna. A barrel-aged wine, dense and balanced, will last ten years and more: this is the case for the Far Niente, the Shaw & Smith Lenswood and the Catena Zapata White Bones. Hamilton Russell's Chardonnay aims for fifteen years. Keep your bottles lying down, somewhere cool and away from light.

At what temperature should Chardonnay be served?

Serve a lively Chardonnay at around 10 to 11 °C, and a barrel-aged Chardonnay at around 12 to 13 °C to let its notes of hazelnut and butter open up. A wine served too cold seems closed. Take the bottle out of the fridge a quarter of an hour before the meal. A sparkling blanc de blancs is served colder, at around 8 °C.

Which dishes to serve with Chardonnay?

Chardonnay loves fine fish in sauce, scallops, lobster, roast or creamy poultry and soft cheeses. Lively wines lean towards oysters and ceviche, oaked wines towards butter sauces. Find our ideas for white fish or white meat.

Oaked or lively Chardonnay: how to choose?

A Chardonnay aged in barrel, especially new oak, gains breadth, with notes of vanilla, hazelnut and brioche: the Far Niente illustrates this style. Ageing in old barrels, foudres or partly in tank keeps tension and fruit, like the Crystallum Clay Shales or the Garcés Silva. Choose the former for rich sauces, the latter for seafood.

What is the difference between Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc?

Sauvignon Blanc is an aromatic grape, with notes of citrus, boxwood and cut grass, most often vinified in tank and drunk young. Chardonnay, more neutral, reflects its place and its ageing more, and takes better to oak and ageing. Compare with our top 10 Sauvignon Blancs.

Is a blanc de blancs made from Chardonnay?

A blanc de blancs is a sparkling wine made solely from white grapes, most often Chardonnay. This is the case for House of Arras's Blanc de Blanc, made in Tasmania using the traditional method, with a long rest on the lees. To compare with Champagne, see our Champagnes.
