Chardonnay 2022Seresin Estate
Located in the Wairau Valley, in the heart of Marlborough, the Seresin Estate vineyard spans hillsides and alluvial terraces near the northern coast of the South Island. The Chardonnay parcels are mainly planted around the Raupo Creek vineyard and nearby sites, benefiting from a cool and sunny climate, marked by significant diurnal temperature variations. The soils combine gravel, silt, and clay, offering natural drainage while retaining essential moisture. This mosaic of terroirs allows for a Chardonnay style that is at once ripe, precise, and driven by maritime freshness.
The grapes are harvested by hand, then whole-bunch pressed before a light settling. The must is then transferred into French oak barrels, mostly old, where spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place, including partial malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged on fine lees in barrels for several months, with occasional bâtonnage to add texture and complexity, before final blending and bottling without excessive filtration to preserve the character of the terroir.
This wine reveals notes of stone fruit, ripe citrus, and fresh apple, complemented by subtle touches of white flowers, sweet spices, and toasted wood, supported by a fine mineral backbone. The palate offers a full and creamy texture, balanced by a lively acidity that extends the finish, with a sensation of controlled volume and a flavorful persistence, leaving an impression of precision and harmony.
Where are we traveling?
MarlboroughNew Zealand
It is located at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, bordered by the shimmering waters of the Marlborough Sounds to the north and the foothills of the Richmond Ranges to the south. The vineyard extends mainly over the alluvial plains of the Wairau Valley and the higher slopes of the Southern Valleys and Awatere Valley, in a bright landscape of stony terraces bordered by snow-capped mountains. The viticultural history is surprisingly recent: it all began in 1973, when Montana (now Brancott Estate) planted the first Sauvignon Blanc and Müller-Thurgau vines on land then thought too cold for viticulture. Success was immediate, and the first vintage of Cloudy Bay, in 1985, cemented Marlborough's status as a global phenomenon that single-handedly redefined the style of Sauvignon Blanc. The climate is cool and sunny, benefiting from the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand, tempered by cool nights and dry winds descending from the mountains, preserving a crisp acidity and aromas of striking intensity. Marlborough has established itself as the world capital of Sauvignon Blanc, producing explosive wines with notes of passionfruit, gooseberry, and lime zest, complemented by increasingly respected elegant and fruity Pinot Noirs, crisp and precise Chardonnays, and traditional method sparkling wines that testify to a region whose ambition now far exceeds its founding grape variety.
The little history of the country
New Zealand
Introduced in 1819, vine growing was greatly developed by Jean-Baptiste Pompallier, a French Marist missionary. Sent to Oceania in 1837, he settled there from January 1838 onwards to develop New Zealand's vineyards. The first quality vineyards were established in the Hawke's Bay region in the 19th and early 20th centuries. After setbacks caused first by phylloxera and then by the First World War, the vineyards began to expand again during the Second World War, when their area doubled. Today, New Zealand has 10 main wine regions spread across the North and South Islands, the largest of which is Marlborough. Most of New Zealand's wine regions have a maritime climate. The country's long, narrow shape means that vineyards are never more than 120 km from the coast, and most are much closer than that (with the exception of the semi-continental Central Otago region). A spine of mountains running down the centre of the country shields most of the main wine regions from the strong westerly winds off the Tasman Sea known as the "Roaring Forties". Because of these winds, there are few wine regions on New Zealand's west coast. The quality and reputation of New Zealand wines are well established. Indeed, the country produces some of the best and most renowned Sauvignon Blanc in the world. And it is no coincidence that New Zealand has made Sauvignon Blanc its emblem, just like its sheep, its kiwis and its legendary haka!
