Malmsey, the richest of the island's noble grape varieties, finds ideal conditions here to concentrate both sugar and acidity. The volcanic soils, made up of basalt, trachyte and tuff, and the temperate oceanic climate, whose temperature and humidity vary with altitude, preserve the acidity that allows these wines to span the decades.

This Malmsey from the 1981 harvest alone was fortified with grape spirit, then aged for thirty-seven years in old American oak casks according to the traditional canteiro system. The casks were gradually moved from the warmest floors of the lodges to the coolest, with regular rackings. Once it had reached its peak, the wine was presented to the tasting panel in December 2018, then bottled in 2019, in 999 bottles.

This wine reveals notes of exotic woods, toasted confectionery, candied fruit, spices, smoke, brandy, honey and walnut.
