Let's talk little, let's talk wine

Billi Billi 2022MOUNT LANGI GHIRAN

Billi Billi is a 100% Syrah cuvée produced from a selection of premium vineyards primarily in the Grampians, a cool, mountainous climate zone in regional Victoria . The expressive wine with fresh red and black fruits such as blackcurrant and blackberry. The whole is completed by notes of dark chocolate , black pepper, blue flowers and fragrant spices such as clove and licorice coming from a passage in neutral oak barrels. Finely structured tannins frame this medium-bodied and generous wine, with a balanced and long finish.

Victoria

Victoria's wine industry owes its beginnings to the discovery of gold in the 1850s, which triggered an influx of settlers from all over the world, particularly from Europe. As in the Sierra Foothills region of California, these settlers brought vines and know-how from home, establishing a wine industry in the state. Unfortunately, the spread of phylloxera at the end of the 19th century dealt the region a blow, and the wine industry could not recover until the 1960s. Victoria is a relatively small but culturally important Australian state. It lies in the south-eastern corner of the continent, with a cool, ocean-influenced climate. It has the greatest diversity of regional climates, from the very cold Macedon Ranges to the very hot regions stretching along the Murray River, from the north-east to the north-west of the state. It is home to the famous Australian Barossa Shiraz, but Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are among the state's most important grape varieties, producing both still and sparkling wines.

The sub-region: the Grampians

This is a very touristy region of small mountains, formerly known as mining country, located roughly halfway between Coonawarra and Melbourne in the state of Victoria. Its vineyards stretch between a national park of the same name and a range of small mountains. It is known for its often peppery Shiraz (white pepper), which are among the most elegant in Australia. It also produces very good Rieslings and Pinot Gris. Today there are a good dozen estates, and the vineyards cover a few hundred hectares. The Grampians region is extremely hilly, with many rocky slopes to the east and gentler slopes to the west. The climate lies halfway between oceanic and Mediterranean. Average temperatures range from 14 °C to 30 °C in summer and from 4 to 15 °C in winter.

The little history of the country

Australia

Australia began producing wine more than two centuries ago. This has resulted in a country rich in old vines, multi-generational winemaking families and an ingrained knowledge and respect for craftsmanship. Add to that a thirst to explore and innovate, a fearless attitude and a diverse notebook of 65 wine regions in many climates, and you have the makings of an extraordinary wine country unlike any other.

Australia burst into export markets in the 1980s and since then has been providing the world with vibrant, fruity and exceptional value wines. Until the late 1990s and early 2000s, Australian wine history was dominated by examples of Shiraz, Grenache and overly concentrated red blends. Between these two extremes lies the diversity of Australia's offering of high quality and regional wines that has always existed.

Australian viticulture is mainly concentrated on the southern oceanic edge where conditions are cooler. There are four main wine regions located around major cities. Western Australia around Perth, South Australia around Adelaide, Victoria around Melbourne and New South Wales around Sydney.

The country is one of the largest wine producers in the world, and was the 4th largest exporter in the world in 2011. This recent development now makes Australia one of the most prominent countries for the quality of its wines. You can taste Australian wines all over the country. Each Australian region has its own grape varieties. Australian wines are defined by their grape variety, unlike French wines which are defined by their terroir.
