Let's talk little, let's talk wine

Located in the Marlborough region, on the northeast coast of New Zealand's South Island, the Settlement Vineyard stretches across well-exposed hillsides near the Wairau Valley. The Blank Canvas estate cultivates its plots there in a cool, sunny climate, tempered by the maritime influence of the Cook Strait. The soils, composed of alluvial gravel mixed with deeper silts, promote deep root growth and slow ripening, resulting in precise, elegant wines with beautiful natural freshness.

The Pinot Noir grapes from Settlement Vineyard are hand-harvested, carefully sorted, and mostly destemmed, with a varying proportion of whole bunches. Fermentation takes place in open-top fermenters using native yeasts, with gentle punch-downs to delicately extract color and tannins. After pressing, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels, including a portion of new oak, for a long aging on fine lees before bottling without excessive filtration, to preserve the purest expression of the terroir.

This wine reveals notes of black cherry, ripe plum, and red berries, complemented by floral touches of violet and peony, as well as spicy nuances of black pepper and clove. Woody accents of cedar and vanilla blend with a subtle mineral backbone. The palate offers a silky texture, vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and a long, precise finish that maintains great freshness.

Marlborough

It is located at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, bordered by the shimmering waters of the Marlborough Sounds to the north and the foothills of the Richmond Ranges to the south. The vineyard extends mainly over the alluvial plains of the Wairau Valley and the higher slopes of the Southern Valleys and the Awatere Valley, in a luminous landscape of stony terraces bordered by snow-capped mountains. The viticultural history is surprisingly recent: it all began in 1973, when Montana (now Brancott Estate) planted the first Sauvignon Blanc and Müller-Thurgau vines on land then thought too cold for viticulture. The success was meteoric and the first vintage of Cloudy Bay in 1985 cemented Marlborough's status as a global phenomenon that single-handedly redefined the style of Sauvignon Blanc. The climate is cool and sunny, benefiting from New Zealand's highest sunshine hours, tempered by cool nights and dry winds descending from the mountains, preserving a crisp acidity and aromas of striking intensity. Marlborough has established itself as the world capital of Sauvignon Blanc, producing explosive wines with notes of passionfruit, gooseberry, and lime zest, complemented by increasingly respected elegant and fruity Pinot Noir, fresh and precise Chardonnay, and traditional method sparkling wines that attest to a region whose ambition now far exceeds its foundational grape variety.

The little history of the country

New Zealand

Introduced in 1819, viticulture was greatly developed by Jean-Baptiste Pompallier, a French Marist missionary. Sent to Oceania in 1837, he settled there in January 1838 to develop New Zealand's vineyards. The first quality vineyards were established in the Hawke's Bay region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. After production setbacks initially caused by phylloxera and then the First World War, the vineyards began to expand again during the Second World War, doubling in size. Today, New Zealand has 10 major wine regions spread across the North and South Islands, the largest of which is Marlborough. Most of New Zealand's wine regions have a maritime climate. The country's long, narrow shape means that vineyards are never more than 120 km from the coast, and most are even much closer (with the exception of the semi-continental region of Central Otago). A mountain spine running through the center of the country protects most of the major wine regions from the strong westerly winds from the Tasman Sea known as the "Roaring Forties." Because of these winds, there are few wine regions on New Zealand's west coast. The quality and reputation of New Zealand wines are well established. Indeed, the country produces some of the best and most renowned Sauvignon Blanc in the world. And it's no coincidence that New Zealand has managed to make Sauvignon Blanc its symbol, alongside its sheep, kiwifruit, and the legendary haka!
