blandys-sercial-10-ans-portugal
Blandy's - Sercial 10 ans

This Sercial from Blandy's comes from the island of Madeira, in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, some 900 kilometres from the Portuguese coast and 600 kilometres from Africa. The grape grows here at 600 metres above sea level in Jardim da Serra, in the south, or at sea level in Seixal and Porto Moniz, in the north. The volcanic soils, made up of basalt, trachyte and tuff, and the temperate oceanic climate, whose temperature and humidity vary with altitude, produce grapes with very high acidity.

The grapes are picked by hand in several passes, according to their ripeness. After skin maceration, the must ferments with native yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks at 18 to 21 °C, then it is fortified with grape spirit to retain the desired level of sugar. The wine then ages in oak casks according to the traditional canteiro method, in the house's century-old lodges, for a blend with an average age of ten years.

This wine reveals notes of macerated dried fruit, candied citrus, bitter almond, hazelnut, beeswax, clove, lemongrass and exotic wood.
