Balassa is an iconic estate in the Tokaj region of Hungary , founded by István Balassa in 2005. Located on 17 hectares spread over more than 70 plots in the villages of Tokaj, Tarcal and Mád, it is distinguished by its plot-by-plot approach and its deep roots in the volcanic terroir of Tokaj . This unique terroir, sheltered by the Carpathians, benefits from a continental microclimate with misty autumns conducive to noble rot and the expression of the Furmint grape variety.
A true Furmint expert, he works each plot independently: manual harvesting, rigorous selection and artisanal vinification (stainless steel vats, French barrels). His objective is clear: to reveal the singularity of each lieu-dit (like Szent Tamás, Bebtsek or Mezés Mály Villő), by vinifying micro-cuvées of rare precision.
The estate is part of the prestigious history of Tokaji , heir to the Roman vineyards, royal property, notably celebrated by Louis XIV: "wine of kings". By combining tradition, respectful viticulture and plot innovation, István Balassa contributes to writing a new page in Hungarian viticulture, where the precise expression of the terroir and oenological modernity meet.
