barbeito-sercial-vinha-da-laje-portugal
Barbeito - Sercial Vinha Da Laje - 2017

From the Barbeito house, this wine comes from the Vinha da Laje parcel, located on the north coast of the island of Madeira, in the Portuguese archipelago. The vineyard is planted on steep terraces on volcanic soils rich in basalt, benefiting from oceanic influence and cool winds that preserve the natural acidity of the grapes. The Sercial vines are trained in traditional pergola on north-facing slopes, which promotes slow and regular maturation and gives the wine its taut and very dry profile.

The Sercial grapes, harvested by hand from the Vinha da Laje plot, are carefully sorted before gentle pressing. The must ferments at controlled temperature until the desired dry profile is obtained, then wine alcohol is added to stop fermentation. The wine is then aged for a long time in oak barrels according to the traditional Madeira method, with oxidative aging in a natural climate, before final blending and bottling.

This wine reveals notes of orange zest, candied lemon, and green apple, complemented by delicate floral touches, iodine and mineral nuances, and slight spicy hints.
