Let's talk little, let's talk wine

Cette cuvée provient de l’aire viticole de Lodi, en Californie, au cœur de la Central Valley américaine. Les vieilles vignes de Zinfandel y puisent leur concentration dans des sols mêlant argile, sable et limons, sous un climat chaud et ensoleillé tempéré par les influences du delta de Sacramento-San Joaquin.

Les raisins fermentent spontanément grâce aux levures naturelles, durant cinq à huit jours. Le vin est ensuite élevé pendant dix-huit mois en fûts de chêne français, afin d’affiner sa structure et d’intégrer ses nuances épicées et toastées.

Ce vin dévoile des notes de mûre, myrtille, prune mûre, cerise noire, orange confite, violette, poivre noir, clou de girofle, vanille, cacao et café. La bouche est ample, charnue et veloutée, portée par une matière généreuse, une fraîcheur mesurée et des tanins souples mais présents. La finale, longue, conserve un relief épicé, légèrement toasté et fumé.

Sonoma Coast

It lies less than an hour's drive north of San Francisco, stretching for more than 80 kilometres along the Pacific coastline of Sonoma County, from Bodega Bay in the south to the edges of Mendocino in the north. The vineyards spread over steep, windswept slopes, often planted on hillsides between 200 and 500 metres above sea level, in a spectacular landscape of redwood forests, wave-battered cliffs and wild meadows plunging towards the ocean. The appellation, created in 1987, was long considered too vast and heterogeneous, until a handful of visionary winegrowers — David Hirsch, the Martinellis, then figures such as Ted Lemon of Littorai — showed in the 1990s and 2000s that the areas most exposed to the Pacific, known as the "true Sonoma Coast" or "extreme Sonoma Coast", produced wines of incomparable intensity and depth. The climate is harsh and maritime, dominated by persistent fog, fierce Pacific winds and cool temperatures that considerably slow the ripening of the grapes, demanding from winegrowers a patience and a willingness to take risks that few Californian regions require. Sonoma Coast has risen to become the absolute benchmark for Californian Pinot Noir, producing taut, saline wines of earthy complexity that rival the best Burgundy crus, alongside finely chiselled, mineral Chardonnay, vibrant, spicy Syrah and a raw energy that conveys all the wild power of this coastline.

In the United States, 90% of the wine produced comes from California. It was the influx of gold prospectors into California that boosted the Californian wine industry in the mid-19th century, particularly in Sonoma and Napa. At the start of the 20th century there were 800 wineries. From 1919 to 1933, Prohibition destroyed the vast majority of the Californian wine industry, so much so that by 1933 only 140 wineries were still producing wine. It was not until 1960 that the wine industry began to recover from Prohibition, and California was then known mainly for fortified wines (in the style of Port). It was also in the 1960s that some of the most famous wineries were founded (Mondavi, Heitz Wine Cellars, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, etc.). In 1976 a landmark event took place: the legendary tasting competition better known as the "Judgement of Paris". It pitted the greatest French wines against the American newcomers. On 24 May, an unexpected result shook the wine world when, to everyone's surprise, the United States came out on top. Yet the competition remains fairly unknown to the general public. Today there is no doubt that the United States produces great wines. Although California largely monopolises the reputation of American wines with its excellent Zinfandels, the state of Oregon produces some of the best Pinot Noir in the world and Washington State offers excellent Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
