blandys-vintage-bual-1920-portugal
Blandy's - Vintage Bual - 1920

This century-old Bual from Blandy's was born on the island of Madeira, in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, some 900 kilometres from the Portuguese coast and 600 kilometres from Africa. The grape thrives here on terraces carved into volcanic rock, where soils of basalt, trachyte and tuff retain little water. The temperate oceanic climate, mild all year round but changing with altitude, allows steady ripening and preserves the acidity that explains the exceptional longevity of the island's wines.

The grapes from the 1920 harvest were vinified and then fortified with grape spirit, before beginning an extraordinary ageing. The wine matured according to the traditional canteiro system, in American oak casks moved over the decades from the warmest floors of the lodges to the coolest, and then in glass demijohns. After a century of ageing, it was bottled in 2020, in an edition limited to 1,199 bottles.

This wine reveals notes of dried fruit, exotic spices, vanilla, smoke, cedar oil, balsam, tobacco and wax.
