The vines are planted on terraces on schist slopes overlooking the river, under a continental climate with very hot summers. Its name pays tribute to “Tonel 12”, the large cask in which the family once kept its old tawnies and which remains a benchmark for the house.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe grapes are harvested by hand and then foot-trodden in temperature-controlled lagares for four days, with native yeasts. True to the estate's style, fermentation is deliberately extended before fortification with grape spirit, in order to control the level of sweetness. The wine then ages for an average of ten years in old 550-litre oak casks, where it acquires its amber hue and complexity.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis wine reveals notes of \u003cstrong\u003ecoffee\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003ecrème brûlée\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003ebrown sugar\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003ebutterscotch\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003ecandied orange peel\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003edried flowers\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003etoasted almond\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003efig\u003c\/strong\u003e. The broad, seductive aromatic palette mingles roasted notes, candied fruit and nuts.
