niepoort-caracolete-portugal
Niepoort - Caracolete - 2015

Caracolete comes from Bairrada, an appellation in central-western Portugal located between Aveiro and Coimbra, not far from the Atlantic Ocean. The grapes come from Quinta de Baixo, on an old hillside planted with 50- to 60-year-old vines, at 2,500 vines per hectare. The clay-limestone soils and the nearby ocean, which brings freshness and humidity under a climate with around 539 mm of rain a year, shape lively, mineral whites with great ageing potential.

The harvest is done by hand at the end of August. The whole berries ferment and then macerate with their skins for a month, in stainless-steel tanks, where the wine also undergoes malolactic fermentation. Ageing continues for five years in the same tanks, without oak, to preserve the purity of the fruit and the tension of the terroir. The wine was bottled in August 2020, unfiltered.

This wine reveals notes of orange blossom, lemon, grapefruit, pear, fennel, dried herbs, flint and bitter almond. The pale yellow colour heralds a wine of great finesse. The palate, very fresh, rests on lively acidity and a pronounced mineral sensation.
